There is a small brass ring that goes on the end of the shift cable boot. How the hell are you supposed to tighten it around the boot without crushing it?

If I use a zip tie, do I make it as tight as possible? (that's what I removed when I took it apart)

They make pliers with a hole drilled into the jaws at the correct diameter so you can't over squeeze it. I forgot the dimension (about 1/2 inch dia - but verify) but I was going to make the tool myself with a spare set of pliers. I have also used the bellows sealer with tie wraps, but the tool is the best method as that is what merc recommends.

I used zip ties for years on my alpha drive. The zip tie was one of the few things that worked perfectly every time on that blasted thing.

After some reading on other sites, it seems the zip tie is the best thing to use. A few "master mechanics" suggested tossing the brass clamp and using the zip tie.

Now, onto another question...

Do I use bellows adhesive on the small end where the zip tie is used? And does this get clamped with the drive in the full down position?

I used bellows adhesive. Then I tied it and moved the drive around before the adhesive set. That allowed the cable and bellows to move around and locate themselves. Seemed to work out OK.

Best regards,
Frank
