Hello All,
I have an 06' Sundancer 320DA and have three smartcraft gauges, one Tach for each engine and one Speedometer in the middle. The system is set for boat speed to come from the paddlewheel and all three gauges read boat speed but here is the catch, after running for a few seconds at speeds above say 8 0r 10 MPH, I get a "Check Paddle" alarm only on my port tach lcd. Stbd tach and MPH gauge have no alarms and read fine. Port gauge reads fine but shows that alarm. Anyone see this?

My guess is that the paddle wheel sensor is connected to the port tach. That makes it the "Master" for configuration (and error messages), and as Master it would also distribute the output to other gauges in the network that can read boat speed.

Hey Barry - aside from the issues you are seeing on the paddle wheel and I think that @Henry Boyd pretty much centered in on the issue, I'd look to move over to GPS for speed if in fact the paddle wheel is having issues.

Thanks, guys, for the input. I will look into tying in SOG from my GPS, but the paddle wheel is connected to the CAN NETWORK on my starboard engine. I am not sure the Smartcraft speedometer will accept boat speed from GPS. The two choices in the meter configuration are PITO or PADDLE. The speedometer meter (Center gauge) reads speed through the water consistently and accurately during the time the alarm appears on the port tach smartcraft gauge. I can accept the alarm and the port tach will continue to function for all engine functions with the exception of the flashing alarm flag on the right top side of its LCD. The drawing below is my current Smartcraft configuration. The Smartcraft harness on the starboard engine has a 4pin connector where the paddle wheel connects. This one is confusing to me, from what I believe, the paddle wheel selection is a system wide setting I made on the center speedometer meter.

Is it possible to reconfigure the port tach settings and eliminate “speed” as one of the readouts?

Maybe it’s intermittently looking for a port side paddle wheel reading when one doesn’t exist.

Barry, Did you ever get this resolved? I have the exact same issue although I do not have the vessel view option.

I always use gps speed
