researched all i could find, literature and how to video, before doing a gimbal /bellow replacement. I've snapped off the plastic end that the rubber hose attaches to on the through transom fitting? that supplies the outdrive gear oil. Everything except this hose got a mention in the removal of the gimbal housing. the hose is held on by a zip tie. It's in an awkward spot and i thought it would pry off, but it broke off leaving about 1/8 inch there, not enough to reclamp the hose to. Any suggestions on how to overcome the problem- thanks shane

If I am understanding the part that broke correctly you will not like my answer.

Alternative #1) Pull engine, replace broken part. I would not do this. I’d wait until I needed to pull the engine for something else like a drive coupling then fix this at the same time.

Alternative #2) Plug holes on both ends. Use the upper drive oil screw hole to manually check the fluid level in the drive by removing the plug and sticking a fresh blade of grass in it, pull the grass blade back out, look at the oil level and add oil as needed.

Just so you know I am not insane with my alternative #2, that is how the Alpha 1 (first generation) worked…..for years.

That's how the Volvo drives still work.

I see it as you do (presentation). It looks like i would need to remove engine to get at the through transom fitting to replace it.after thinking about it in my sleep, I'm going to plug up the broken spout and drill and tap 1/8 npt out the end of the fitting, i think it will still have clearance with the hose coming off horizontally. by the way, I'm not unappreciative of the help, it's that you're asleep when I post ( i'm at least 5 hrs behind the west coast) thanks guys

When you flush your toilet is it true that the water swirls in the opposite direction for you down under people?

Depending on how much room you have to get to the back side of the engine on the starboard side, This can be done with out pulling the engine sometimes, That is if you have someone small and flexible.

Depending on the style fitting you have, One is plastic and the other older style is Brass.

The brass one has a nut holding it on in the inside of the boat, And the plastic one has a E clip holding it on, And on some boats you can reach it from either going past the starter area, Or looking down at it under the steering ram. Once you get the clip or nut off it will come out by pulling on it from the out side of the boat.

Here is a link to the part. http://www.mercruiserparts.com/Show...=2686&bnbr=270&bdesc=OIL+RESERVOIR+COMPONENTS

The newer plastic style fitting is Number 1, And Number 5 unhooks from number 1, Kind of like your speed o hose did when you pulled the drive off the boat. And I believe you have this style fitting, But if not then you have Number 36, And that will be the brass style fitting and you will need to get the nut off, See numbers 36-40 for the brass style.

you tell me which way does your water goes and I'll tell you mine
thanks boat tech, plastic it is, I'll practice some contortionist exercises and now that i know what I'm trying to do I'll have a crack at getting it out

after encouragable advice from the forum, i got that fitting out, but not without a bit more carnage.I removed the water hose from the plastic through transom fitting that goes up to the cylindrical log on the top rear of the motor, removed the bolt that holds the log in place and pushed the log aside. with that done and the steering ram retracted to the drivers side, i then had enough room to get my left arm down to remove the e clip, coming in from the port side. The carnage, I broke the quick coupling spud where the oil reservoir hose pushes on, trying to get the hose off. when a hose has been in place undisturbed for a number of years I guess it's inevitable that brittle plastic will break.
