My father was talking to me about going striped bass fishing. Now I am slightly firmilliar with it since I used to go Bluefishing with my uncle on a 125' boat in Brielle NJ. We would get a striper or 2. Now Dad wants to go after stripers. He normaly puts in at Sayreville and hangs in the Raritan Bay. Now My craft is not yet done. (Job taking forever) So we would be taking his. Anybody here want to help and give up some trade secrets? Like where and when to get em? Best Bait?
Thanks
Steve

Anytime, but early am or late pm is best. You can snchor over a reef shallow water and cut up pieces of mackerel od bunker large chouks2-3 inches and drift the bait out with no weight. You can troll for them along reefs or shore in shallow water using lead core line color coded for depth. A tube and worm works great for this. A bait shop can set you up for this. Good fishing!

I told my kids that we are going to catch lots of fish this year (they think I know how to fish :smt001 Well guess what? :smt009 next comes :smt089)

So I have been doing a little research on this topic and it seems that people are catching stripers using clams on the Raritan "back bay" just outside of Keyport. As the water warms up, the stripers should be running closer to the Hook, but for now they are in the shallow warmer water (at least that is what I read)

I was at West Marine over the weekend and bought some tackle and they told me I could catch both Stripers and Blues using lures and trolling. I asked about clams and they said I "could" use them, but it wasnt necessary. The best advice I found was to speak to a local tackle store and learn what is working.

You might find more info on these 2 sites.

Tube and Worm (Sandworms) Ugly nasty things...

Storm makes some nice soft plastics also for catching stripers. 5" Bunker or Shad work well.

Eels also work well.

I want to create a new water sport... (Catching) Been fishing for years and I figure if I go catching, it might be more fun... :smt101

That's always the Idea. Thanks for the help, keep it coming. Dad's been talking about going for a while. When I was young we went lake fishing at a weekend flat we had in PA. This was like every weekend. We rarley went to the bay. Now the place is long sold. They got there new boat and go out for fluke and go crabbing. So our total salt water fishing experience is limited. But looking to have a great summer when our busy lives allow. Seems like somthing always gets in the way. Between Me and my work schedule and then they get a brand new boat and it gets hit by a car wrecking the outboard engine, killing the whole first year...It just never stops.
However Fishing and not "catching" is better than workin!

Where about are you planning to do this striper fishing? Lake or ocean?

Live bait works well in lakes and trolling during the seasonal migration works for salt.

Found this thread at the Hulltruth. Nice Catch!
