Tach Issues

Hello all I am new boat owner and new to the Sea Ray Club. I was wondering if anyone could help me out.

I recently purchased a 1987 Sea Ray Sundancer with twin 4.3 Mercruiser engines. My problem is with my tachometers. With the engines both off my Port tach reads 1,000 and my Starboard reads 1,500. When traveling slow both gauges read 2,200 with the sync gauge right in the middle. When cruising on plane the port guage reads 3,200 and the starboard reads 4,200 with the sync in the middle I trust the sync gauge because if I match the rpms the boat tends to turn to starboard. Any help would be appreciated.

Welcome to Sea Ray tachs. I had the same problem on my 03 320. Be prepared to replace the tachs at some point. I trusted the sync - the tachs are flaky.

On the back of your tachs is a small selector for 4, 6, or 8 cylinder. Remove the panel with the tachs in it and with a small screwdriver turn that switch back and forth several times kinda fast. Then reset them for you engines and replace the panel. That should solve your problem. It solved mine.

I have the exact same problem - my port tach is the one which is closest and the starboard is always higher. I get the port RPMs to where I want to be and then use the sync gauge. The cylinder selector switch on the back is certainly worth a try as both of mine were a bit flaky and at least the port one works now. Good luck!
