Maybe if I ask the question a different way. I am going to replace my Northstar vhf pos with something new- can someone tell me how much of a problem I'm likely to have with the connections (power & NMEA) are they going to be different & hard to replace?

It's a boat... so the simple answer to your power/nmea questions are yes and yes.

The protocols are standard. The connectors are usually proprietary (save the PL259 on the antenna). IMO, you are better off using the old stuff to pull a line to connect to the new stuff and pulling new stuff. Splicing or any attempt to splice will only lead to problems down the road.

I've never replaced a Northstar but have replaced Raytheon & Raymarine with Garmin & Standard Horizon units, there's not much to it the new units will come with wiring diagrams. Your biggest problem will be to find a unit that matches your old cutout if yours is to large you'll need to make an adapter out of something like 1/4" starboard made to fit your new one.

The NMEA & Power plugs will be different (probably) just cut the wires and splice them with marine grade connectors to your new plugins , the antenna is standard or you may need an adapter from the install sheet from Northstar it's a standard plug.

Here's a link to the install sheet from Northstar.

I replace my NS100 pos over the winter with a Raymarine ray260 VHF and a shakespeare XP 5225 antenna,
Connected in nema 0183 to gps 178c.
made a trim cover to install new speaker as it is smaller then NS, solider new pl259 and nema wires, snaked new VHF Cable.
the whole project took me about 8 hour total including fabrication and painting of trim which came out nice I used azek instead of starboard because I had some.
I have a mechcanical and carpentry background
i found that the old vhf antenna and tv antenna wires where spliced at the arch I guess they do this in case you have to remove arch for transportion of vessel.
Ps all I have left of the old radio is a NS100 mic clip.
my kids used the mic as a toy in their hot wheel which is all it was good for!
