I just did an electrical tune-up on my engines. I changed the caps, rotors, wires & plugs. I did not change the coils or the sensors inside of the distributors. Is this necessary? Not being a mechanic, my thought was that they either work or don't work? Is there any middle ground here and will a new coil and/or sensor perform any better than the existing ones? I realize that everything will fail in time, but are these fairly reliable parts?

Leave the distributor internals alone. It's not unusual for them to last the lifetime of the vehicle (or boat n this case).
