Hi, I ve a searay 200 with a 5.0 mercruiser and was wondering what diesel engine would replace this with hopefully a little more performance would also be good , Thanks for any suggestions

Hi Mike,

Just as a disclaimer, I have no idea where “cork” is and I do not have ESP so I don’t know the year of your boat. Ditto on your drive.

My suggestion is if you want a diesel powered boat then sell this boat and buy a diesel powered boat.

The conversion you are considering is not economically viable.

I'm guessing Cork Ireland? Over in Europe the diesel engines are more common in boats. It's VERY expensive to do this in the states, but in Ireland it might cost less proportionately than it would in the states. I'm sure one of our overseas correspondents will have some info! If not, check some of your local marinas to see what engine and how much.

Make sure the power to weight ratio works for your boat. Most deisel that make good power and high torque are pretty heavy. A 20 foot boat like yours and mine may not be able to handle the extra weight very well and all the power gain will equate in fuel comsumption trying to get it on plane. Most likely the drive ratio will need changed and this will add to the cost.

You may be better off buying a ready made boat instead of converting as Presentation suggests.
