So I’m the next few weeks it looks as if my 88 will be forced from her covered slip. Since the day a brought her home from Richmond she has bee in a covered slip. Only the evening sun got to her.

I have four weeks or less to get her ready for this move. What can I do to get her prepared to be out in the element's. I’m hopeful to be over on our new floating docks at the same marina, but I’m also looking at the slips at Grays Creek / Surry Seafood.

No offense, but I think you are over reacting to being in a normal slip. It's a boat, it's meant to get wet. If you have any leaks, they will need to be fixed, but that's about it. I have been in an "open" slip for my whole life, only experienced one with a roof these past few winters here on the bay. I like the open slip the best.

Sucks that you have to move and re-winterize things. I feel your pain on that one.

No offense taken, I’ve just never have been out in the open. I do have a leak but have been unable to find it yet. Windshield looks to be the issue but it could also be the hardtop supports. I hope to do a quick pull this week for cleaning, zinc, and some work on the platform

Have someone stand on the bow with a water hose, spraying windshield and hardtop supports from the outside. See if you can recreate the water leak.

Just curious, why do you prefer open slips? Seems it would add a lot to maintenance and upkeep?

I like the outdoors, that one big reason I like boating so much. I feel captive under a roof (I am not claustrophobic). Most days sitting on the back of the boat in the sun is a welcomed feeling. I also don't mind the rain at times, it's sounds are very relaxing hitting the hull.

Not sure what added maintenance there would be except the affects of the sun on the fiberglass.

That said I do prefer my roofed over patio vs. the open deck. But not a screened in porch, much like not having the camper back on my boat.

EDIT: I will say that if I were in an extremely hot climate like FL I would probably take a roof over open. The summers in FL can be brutal. I ran a boat out of WPB (Sailfish marina) and it was brutal.

I would prefer a covered slip if that was an option. Just not many around where we keep our boat, so live with the open slip.

So here in CT, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a covered slip:).
My guess is snow loads, but I really don’t know.
Anyway - can’t you get it shrink wrapped if you are worried about leaks? Here almost every boat is shrink wrapped or covered with a tarp over a homemade frame structure.

I’m already thinking of having a sunscreen made to cover the cabin area of the boat. It should help with the UV issue and keep the cabin shaded.I’ve already started the Winter waxing of the topside and nonskid. I will also have to get the back cover on the old girl just to help with snow and rain.

The plan is to run a camera up and into the windshield / support area and see what might be going on.

Put some good water pressure on your hatches and all windows and then check for leaks in the cabin.. That's one reason I love a covered slip, I had a slow drip in one of my previous boats hatches and never had to fix it.

If you don't have a cockpit cover, might want to invest in one, or at a minimum one that covers the helm.

I kept about 2 different boats outside in the water on the Appomattox. Never had an issue and it was never really too hot. One of the nice things about an outdoor open slip is rain, rain keeps the boat pretty clean.

Dang, when I saw the title to this thread I thought it was going to be a fashion show. :p
