Having never owned a dinghy (hopefully that changes in the near future), I'm not terribly familiar with them and all of the supporting hardware that goes along with it. One thing that stands out to me is breadth of options with these little boats. I always see them and think, man I want one of those. Now that the opportunity has presented itself and I've really dug in and started making choices I find it hard to decide based on product advertisments. The boat itself presents many options as well as outboard choices. Many of these are dictated by the size of your boat (and wallet) and personal preferance. The thing that really shocked me was when I started looking into how I was going to lug this thing around as a tender. Davits for the swim platform seem rather poorly designed and surprisingly expensive. This leads to the purpose of this topic.

One common element I see used from manufacturer is the quick attachment bracket. Like this:

It seems simple enough, but I really don't like the idea of bolting anything on top of my swim platform. The bracket itself seems low profile, but it's just one more item in a slippery area of my boat that sees heavy traffic, often from children. From those of you who use a setup like this, how intrusive is it? I find it rather unsightly, but due to the lack of better options, it leaves little choice. I would likely make something like a Dom's Dinghy Davit to go in these brackets for the dink to sit on.

How many of you, if the choice were available, would prefer a mounting system that attached under the platform. Something simple, yet modular in nature that while the davit system was not needed, perhaps while anchored and swimming, could be quickly and easily removed. No tools needed and small easy to stow pieces. While the full system was in place it would function essentially the same as the other products currently available. A tilting skid for the dink to be pulled onto, and rest on. The difference being in the bracketry. This system would be able to be easily removed with no epxosed parts while utilizing the swim platform. When the day is coming to a close simply reinstall the brackets (no tools) and load up the dink.

I'm certainly a do it myselfer and I enjoy a challenging project. I also tend to overthink things. Not having any experience with these products it's hard to make an accurate decision. If you guys think this is a worthwile effort, I'll go forward with it. Heck, even if you don't think it's worthwhile I probably still will. $1,000 for a davit system seems a little steep.

I have a few ideas in my mind, but I want to get some input before I share too many details.

Thanks.

Do some searches on this site for davits. Over the years there have been some good posts about davit systems, including some where people have made their own that looked pretty good.

Magstang. I went with Doms davits ,with my dingy. It's nice to be able to slide the dingy up on the tilting brackets with the engine on it.Check out my album. There is a ton of info on Doms Davit ,do a search. Good luck. Steve

I have seen the davits. My question is about the bracket that they mount to.

I think the Dom, Nautley... design of the cradle is good. I intend to use something like that for myself. I just question the mount that bolts on top of the swim platform.

I also went with Dom's Dinghy Davits, works perfectly. As far as the bracket that slides into the Weaver, I had my sheet metal guy make them out of stainless per the drawing Dom had sent me. I have it some where if you need it.

The Weaver mount is a non issue, it has such a low profile you won't even notice it...........you are right, you are over thinking this........LOL

Don't even notice my Davits in the quick kit. Now I have four of them on the boat seeing how I bought a different dinghy. Never buy old dink. I learned the hard way.

If you have don't have the extended swim deck, I made this bracket to help install them from the engine compartment. I hated the holes, but the boat isn't worth much anymore anyways.

Bought some of the weaver davit's off ebay. Saved a little, I bet I have about $500 in it all. $200 just for the arch bracket. Glue for the pads was $60. Not cheap for this system. I still had to make the stand off bracket.

this is all my new dink and have not tested it all yet, but is a similar set up as I had for the last dink and worked really good.

Thanks for the pictures.

For some reason my mind re-engineers everything I see wether it needs it or not. There's not many things I don't think I can make better.

I know, it's probably some kind of illness.

I do the same thing. I try to foresee any problems in the future they I may have with the set up before I execute the idea.

There is a company here that makes something I think like what you have described. Bolts underneath the swim platform, slides out when not in use, and no need for anything to be glued onto the tender.

I think I have the info on my computer at work, will try and remember to post the link tomorrow .

I have it saved as I think it is what I will do

Steve- I see you are using a pull up system on your 420 - with the high platform is it working well? How heavy is your set up? I was considering the nautley roll on, they now have a set up that will offset 10" to leave some more platform accessible. I was told it should work well if Ii supplement with a block / tackle set up for retrieval - I have about 200lbs boat/ motor. Thanks.
