Just had the engine replaced this year. i had a problem with my out drive and the engine overheated first time out. got that fixed. boat ran great for 3 weeks, yesterday i had to rev the boat up to 4000 rpms just to keep it at plane. Normally i cruise at 3300 rpms witch is a good speed.
Also my bilge pump getting going on pumping a lot of water out. could this be form an exhaust bellow? They were replced 4 years ago. The boat gets hot at an idle now also, im not sure is this is a related problem.

Anything i can do to check this out today? i have the boat on a trailer.

its a 1983 245 sea ray sundacer 350 mercruser.

So you were taking on water while underway? If you are taking on water the boat will need to work a lot harder to stay, or get on plane, since you are obviously carrying more weight. Could be a bellow, trim the outdrive up all the way and look under there to see if they are cracked. Also, the engine is getting hot at idle, maybe you blew a cooling hose that is leaking in the bilge, causing the bilge pump to run, motor to get hot, and poor performance. Maybe it just needs a new impeller in the outdrive.

i just went for another boat ride. Its getting hot at an idle but when i rev it up its fine.

I looked for any leaks and could not find anyhting, but still got some water in the hull. The bellows look good.

The boat does not have any speed witch is odd, but plenty of power still. Maybe the coupler is slipping?its brand new. I give up. I just dont have the money to have a mechanic fix it.

as far as i know it needs a new impellar, somehting leaking water why does the boat have no speed but engine has plenty of power?

Something is missing here. How much water are you taking on? Like you can see some after an afternoon of boating or like the pump runs all the time. Also, you mentioned the engine still has plenty of power, does it rev up and roar but the boat does not go, or the boat goes slow, or can't get on plane? Sounds like you may have a slipping prop. hub.

Also, the impeller is cheap, but takes some time and know how to change. I have always had it done, but I know a guy..... You could prob. do it yourself if you are somewhat inclined and had a manual. Maybe a good investment either way, the manual that is.

yeah i put the boat in the water yesterday again and no water came in liek it was the other day, im confused. It was pumping maybe a gallon an hour.

I changed the prop and it was the same. The boat planes off fine but after a min or two the boat is ready to loose plane at 3300rpm. Normally at 3300 im doing about 20-25 nots. If i open the throttle it revs up to 5300 and is fast. just doesnt make sense. I thinking maybe one of the exaust bellows are bad and is pumping water into the baot on plane and thats whats make engine loose performance.

Exhaust bellows won't leak into the boat, in fact some people replace the bellows with a tube that isnt secured to the outdrive. If water is leaking in through a bellows and coming into the boat it will either be through the u-joint or the shift cable bellows. The u-joint would be the most likely culprit for a lot of water, and should be checked soon if its suspected as the gimble bearing and u-joint will be ruined by water intrustion into the bellows.

i pulled the outdrive off and there was no water in there. would there be water if it was leaking?

now i am thinking this might sound really stupid but maybe my rpm guage is off? it is idleing at 1500 but it isnt much? and through the canal i am 2000rpm. normally i am 1200 through the canal and ideling around 1000-1200. maybe thats why its seems slower LOL man i really hope so.

it's the hot water heater - disconnect the hose going to it - it happened to me too - but my mechanic caught it before being splashed for the very first time - since i just bought it..
