Our boat club is going to the St Augustine Municipal Marina in October. Most folks just shop and eat all day.

Personally, I want to take a short cruise and hit some nice water!

Question -- Is a there a nice area to anchor and enjoy the beach (i.e. like "Disappearing Island"). I have heard that the pass near Fort Matanzas is nice, but have not been there. So, if you anyone would recommend this site - specifically, what is a good approach, and where is the best spot to anchor for an afternoon.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks!!!!!

The Matanzas Inlet area is beautiful with white sandy beaches and great places to anchor along the South Shore just past Fort Matanzas.

It is a lot like disappearing Island with fresh water, lots of friendly folks and one of the best anchor spots I have found anywhere.

When approaching from the South make sure you stay in the channel. The tendency is to cut across and not go far enough around when entering the cut. You will see the flag and top of Fort Matanzas over the dunes before you get to the cut. Just stay in the channgel and make sure you don't turn too soon as there are sand bars.

You can anchor close to shore and wade / swim just like Disappearing Island. Make sure you have a second anchor for the rear.

Which club are you with?

Jerry,

Thanks. I assume we will be coming from the North (from the Intercoastal). Is there a different approach?

I am a part of the Central Florida Cruise Club. We are a cruising club that trailers to many places around Florida. Most folks have boat between 26' - 32'. Check us out at

Hi Nick,

When approaching from the North the channel is much easier to navigate and you have a good view of Fort Matanzas as you approach. If is a short ride after you pass the no wake zone at Devil's Elbow.

It is a great place and I know you will enjoy the area.

If you are ever down this way stop by and have a cold beverage. I live on the Intracoastal about 2 miles North of the drawbride at Highbridge. The boat "Beach Runner" is easy to spot.
