I guess the CO detectors in my cabin have died. Given they are original equipment, I probably shouldn't be relying on them anyway. Any recommendations for replacements? I've read only to use marine-grade units.. do they have to be 12volt hard-wired units like the originals, or can they be battery operated? Does the Coast Guard have any requirements I need to know about?

I have them on my tug from wally's world.
They are the battery ones. :smt001

Battery operated household units work fine. They are the same except they don't have "marine" before them. That makes them $20 instead of $100.

I replaced my factory monitors with the CMD-4MR-RLY model. The big benefit for me with these over the factory is that the new ones will shut off my generator if they alarm. You can also send them back to the manufacturer yearly and they will "recrtify" them. I bought them from Jim here at BOE and they were about half the price of the list price.

if I remember correctly you are to have them serviced each year. I kept battery back up plug in co monitors on board as well as the factory.

My next boat will be a diesel with straight drives.

I use 3 different types:
1- replaced original one with fireboy CMD-4MR same as stated above.
1- 120AC with 9v battery backup with digital reading.
2- battery operated with digital reading (1 in the cabin and one in the cockpit)

My next boat will be a diesel with straight drives.

I wish to have the same but this doesn't mean you can afford to take short cuts with CO detectors. You always have to remember that CO can come from boats near by.

I have the OEM hard wired detector and $20 battery unit from Home Depot as a backup. This past winter while idling at the dock for a few minutes with the camper enclosure on and the cabin door open both detectors went off at almost exactly the same time. Glad to know they both work so well.

How is it wired to shut off the genny? That sounds very useful.

It's supposed to be a direct plug and play, however, mine did not work as advertised.

When you test the unit, you are supposed to do it with the gennie running. During the test process, the unit is supposed to shut the gennie down. So far, I'm stumped.

don't fool with these babies. My original Firebouys went haywire last year. I sent them back and they recalibrated them for $25. All is well, $$ well spent.

On the link in the original post you can find a link to the pdf of the installation instructions about halfway down. The information on the relay for the generator shut off is about page 8-10. "The relay contacts are closed
when the unit is powered and in normal operation and open during alarm or when the
test/silence button is pressed. Because the only unit that opens the relay contacts is the
unit that detects the CO it is necessary to wire all relay contacts in series so that any unit
detecting CO has the ability to shutdown the generator." My generator is set up from the facotr to be shut down via this method so it was fairly simple. I did not wire them myself. I had them done by the same person who installed the generator.
