Electrical Smoke Solution

Thanks for the inputs and thoughts regarding the smoke that was caused by the voltage spike caused by the reverse polarity. The guy that I hired to go through the electric system was stymied and we overlooked one of the basics. The boat ran fine on the generator but not when plugged into shore power. The shore power was fine. What is left? Thanks to Mark Muntz of Sea Ray we took the shore power plug apart and it was the culprit. The neutral was loose and the plug was shorting. An expensive lesson as I lost 3 televisions from the surge. I just invested 10 dollars at Costco for three surge protectors.

Ok Bill now I have questions;

Do you have the built in power cord/reel or do you a Marinco shore power cable?

Bill, I'm glad you were able to find and correct the problem. Gary recently bought new TV's for his boat, so he may be able to share/save you some time researching what fits your cabinets.

As far as the Costco surge protectors are concerned...... those and any other reasonable surge protector would not have protected your TV's. The best surge protectors can re-direct spikes lasting mili-seconds to MOV's, etc., but they cannot take seconds or minutes of even 240V. Sorry to rain on your parade.

Again, I'm glad you were able to fix your problem. Boats in this range will $2500 and $5000 you to death!

I have the cablemaster power reel (maybe it is not Marinco).

I am going to install a 15" flat screen in the VIP stateroom with an articulating mount that will allow us to snug up the tv while underway and it fits perfectly in the 16" by 16" opening. In the master stateroom I am installing the same Element 15" with an articulating mount and will keep it behind the original cabinet door, snugged up against a bulkhead. I wrestled with going larger but I think the 15' is plenty. We shall see.
