My engine hours , T 4.3's, have always been a half hour difference until now. I noticed that my starboard engine hours jumped up 10 hours, what gives. The tach on this engine has always been erratic, could this be the culprit?

I believe the engine hours are stored in your engine ECMs (I know they are on mine). If that's the case you might want to have a Tech connect up a scanner to see what the hours are in the ECM.

Luckydogs,

Try this. On our vintage Searays there is a selector switch on the back of the tachometer. This switch is used to set the Tach to be used with a 4, 6, or 8 cylinder engine. This switch is famous for getting dirty over the years and causing erroneous tach readings. Dave S is right on the engine hours being stored in the ECM on later model boats, but in the case of our vintage it is simply an hour meter built into the tach. The hour meter also goes crazy when the Cylinder selector switch gets dirty. I have a slip neighbor with a 2002 310 that was racking up hours on his port side tach at almost 10-1 last summer.
If you get lucky you can pull out your dash panel, rotate the switch a few times with a small screwdriver and this will clean the contacts and restore normal Tach operation. If not, you will just have to replace the Tach.

Cheers,

Jim

On my 320DA we have had problems with both tachs. They jump around and then cut out. I had the stbd one replaced, but the port has been acting up. As a result, engine hours are all wacked.
