Registering dinghy in NYS

Related question, how are folks putting your registration numbers on your inflatables? I just purchased a new one, having had a few before, and trying everything from rubber letters, to registration plates, to painted on registration. Always have to deal with the state registration sticker also.

Has anyone built a better mousetrap for this seemingly simple issue?
A friend of mine had a stencil made. He colors the number in with permanent black marker. He saves the stencil and touches them up each year...numbers always look like new.

I have never registered mine.... It is a tender to go from the vessel to shore and back so it doesn't need to be independently registered in the great state of Washington.

The way I read the rules in NJ, if it is only used as a tender, it did not need to be registered... So I never registered my tender as well... But I am just a rebel... Here is what my DMV says:
"In order to use New Jersey waterways, all boats more than 12 feet in length must be titled at a Regional Service Center or MVC Agency. The only exceptions are: ship's lifeboat, canoe, kayak, inflatable boat, surfboard, rowing scull, racing shell and tender/dinghy used solely for direct transportation between a vessel and shore."

We were staying at the Seattle Yacht Club and my daughter and I went for a tour of the bay we were maybe 500 yards from boat at the dock. So we were not going boat to shore.
Will register the new dinghy that has a 5HP on it.
It was the Seattle Police boat that stopped us. It was also a weekend of a big football game. I assume it was a sobriety and alcohol check also.

I have a 12.5 foot Zodiac with a 20 I registered for lakes and rivers. I got the dealer to put the numbers on the boat. They are "Paint" flexible and do not crack when you fold the boat up for storage. It almost seems like the glue they use to repair the boat but it is coloured.

update: We're registered! It was painless, I showed up with the registration form and tax form (since it was a private sale), pictures of the HIN Plate and the boat, certificate of origin, and bill of sale. $63 later and I was on my way with a shiny green sticker.
