Didn't feel like driving down to the boat today. I do too much driving. Poking around the web, I found wikihow. Found this to be very funny. If any of you have been holding back from becoming canboters because it's too expensive, your ship, or should I say, you canbote has come in.

Best regards,
Frank

ok - I must be bored - searched for it and found it:

A couple of notable quotes....

"Since the vessel must be seaworthy, the flotation is a critical factor in the design"

"The drop tanks are ideal, since they are rust resistant, and contain honeycombed baffle material which makes them extremely strong, plus they are "aerodynamic", which would roughly equal "hydrodynamic""

I see a darwin award in this for someone....

If using recycled drums or air craft fuel tanks for flotation, they should not contain any residue of their original contents. Fuels, oils, or industrial chemicals could leak out and cause an enviromental impact if they are not emptied and thoroughly cleaned prior to use.

Ah, reminiscences of the Great Chattahoochee Raft Races of the '70s. Now there were some creative pontoons and rafts!

I see the possibility of a contest at some upcoming CSR gatherings.... a friend of mine was telling me about a duct tape regatta which sounded like a lot of fun. You get a 4x8 sheet of plywood, a roll of duct tape, 2 2x4's (not sure of length) and a 1lb box of screws. Then you have 4 hours to build your boat and then race to a piling and back.

I can see how you can build a boat out of that stuff. But how do you make an engine? Everyone knows that boats need at least one engine. A race without engines is like boating without water.

Very true - I think most teams fashion oars out of the 2x4s. Rocket ships they are not.... but you are probably more concerned about the thing just floating with minimal leakage than anything else.

We're participating in a cardboard boat regatta this Saturday; last year at the same event about half the entries either folded (literally) at the start or slowly sank along the course. For those there was eligibility for the Titanic Award.

Bah! Who cares about floating? Put a few horsepower behind it and you can plane off on your dining room table.

Your wife might not understand, however.

This guy did it, way back in primitive times with the engine equivalent of bear skins and stone knives.

Oh dearie me!

I must have offended some poor aspiring do-it-yourself canboters with my first posting in this thread. I see that the first post received two naughty-naughtys. But the canboters were too cowardly to post by name. Oh well. Here it is.

I don't know what "Ganging up" means either. How does one person "gang up?" Anyone want to guess what the poor canboter meant?

Frank

If it makes you feel better, I think this is excellent work and should be interpreted as extremely helpful for the canbote crowd. It is so helpful that I gave you a green ball post to counteract the red ball canbote people.

As a kid, I would've given this a try, but moms table was round and it split in the middle for adding leaves....so I used a big chunk of styrofoam instead. At that time I had not even heard of a tooner.
