Cummings 6CTA 8.3

Did sea trial / survey today. LOL. Apparently "cruise" button stopped them from gaining rpm. We saw 2650rpm on the tach's as well as manually according to the tech. I'm happy with that. I do plan to address the overprop thing soon as I can. Thanks everyone for your help!

Yes, understand. I have a cummings specialist that's going to be there. Again, just trying to educate myself. The engine person is separate from survey. Will be doing oil samples for genny, trans, engines, etc.
If you're in the Chesapeake, there is no better Cummins specialist than Joe Sass who works out of the Cummins Power location in Glen Burnie. He's been at it over 30 years and has seen it all. He's the only guy to go to, but not cheap due to travel, etc. He was on my boat last week and will be back end of this week - but that's another longer story.

Bottom line is just having a "Cummins specialist" is not good enough. Make sure to get a complete engine survey including scoping the cylinders, a compression test, and a blow-by test. Also thorough checks of aftercoolers and heat exchangers (open them up). Sounds like a lot but unless the PO can give you verified records of proper servicing of these in addition to oil sample tests, it's cheap insurance. Engines are $23,500 each for RECONs. I know.

Hello folks,
Any thoughts why my engines, on occasion, would stall after going from to forward to neutral to reverse to dock the boat? 6CTA's on a 2004 420 Sedan Bridge.
Thanks in advance.

What rpm are you idling?

Have your ecm's been flashed to the latest available version? This fixed a common stall/stumble problem.

Turns out this boat has slight leaking head gasket. I"m bummed. Very bummed.

Not necessarily a big thing, like Blue says have it fixed by a Cummins tech. if no other issues.

Thank you for your responses. I believe I idle at 600rpm's. How does one get the ecm's flashed?

Contact you local Cummins service center. They will be able to flash the ecm's for you.

I have a 2005 DA with Cummins 6CTAs. I'm looking for the part number for the Raycor fuel filter elements. Thanks for any help.

I will likely need the port side head removed and taken to machine shop. Then put back on with new gasket. Does he travel to/from boat and do you believe this is something he can do?

He can do anything on a Cummins engine. As I said he works for Cummins Power Systems in Glen Burnie (410-590-8700). They're just off Rt 100 south of the airport. Ask for the marine department.
You'd have to get someone else to take the deck off since the head can't be removed with it on. Likely they would want to remove the engine and take it back to their shop to do the work.

Good morning,
I posted earlier about a stalling issue on my 6cta's. It was recommended to have my ECM flashed to possibly correct an idle issue. Problem is finding someone to do it!! The Cummins contacts in lower southern CT is in New York or Niantic. They are swamped with work and their rates are crazy!! Does anyone have recommendation for Cummins mechanic in the southern CT area?
Thanks

If your engines are 480 CE's you would be wise to replace the head with the Cummins updated head to address the valve seat problem.

Cummins parts. Have you read what Tony has to say at sbmar.com?
Lots of info there on those engines and postings by people who have had dropped seats.
