Official 380 Thread

Hello all,

I am new here and new to the large boat world. Previously, I have been a waterskiier but would really like to get into this lifestyle now.

I'm looking at buying a 2000 380. Are there any must ask questions for common issues on these?

The boat I'm considering has the following:

  • Upgraded Twin Mercruiser 8.1 HO with 285 hours (These were swapped after finding water in previous engines I was told)
  • Rebuilt Westerbeke Generator with 30 hours
  • Bow Thruster
  • Radar, GPS, AutoPilot, Upgraded Stereo, VHF, Depth, etc.
  • Newer canvas with extended bimini to cover platform
  • New ice machine
  • Newer fridge
  • Flat screen television
  • Satellite
  • Platform BBQ with cover
Any thoughts, advice or the like is greatly appreciated.
Tell us where you are, how many hours you use boat a year, how many night anchored a year, are you planning on going from marina to marina. Your generator will use 1 GPH.

Sounds like a boat someone has kept up with, some people don’t invest in upgrades....

most important advice I would have, get a survey and have compression tested in both engines/genny. That’s not a lot of hours on a genny, mine has 1350 or so and runs great

Is it a salt boat or fresh water?

Hi there,

I'm in Ontario, Canada so that limits my boating season to May - October. I expect to mostly do day trips to the open water a few km/miles out and just drift and relax with family and friends. I'm sure we'll sleep on it on weekends and hopefully get in 2 or 3 multi day trips. This is all completely new to us and a bit of an experiment. I imagine this will be a 2 season boat and either be gone for something newer or be gone because boating was not for us.

Thanks for that response. I have a good feeling about this one but haven't pulled the trigger yet. Having a survey completed on Friday so we will see what is hiding in the closets. Thank you for the compression test idea.

It has always been a fresh water boat.

We have a 380 Aft cabin and we use it for 2 month strait in the spring and a month in September. Heat is a problem for us as boat is all eclectic. We run the generator 2 hours a day to cook, make water and heat water for shower. You being on fresh water I assume a filter system and UV purifier will give you all the fresh water you need, cottage type system should work. Our boat holds 100 US gallons and we can get 4 days of showers out of it for 2 people. In Ontario it is hot you you will probably run the generator for AC. As to things you might want are a 2500 watt inverter and large house battery bank. We have 10 six volt golf cart batteries. It is too much according to some. We have a TV with flat Shakespeare antenna in US we get 10 to 50 channels in Canada we get 1. No idea about your area. Ice maker on our 10 batteries will last 2 days with party use, ice maker on all the time.

Good deal
When I had mine surveyed, it ran at factory spec, 36.5mph. Contemplated not spending the money. Glad I did, had 2 Cyl came back low....
so well worth the money

380 is a great boat love the layout, power and handling

I am looking for the autopilot pump. Part number m81120. The old style with the ports on top.
I replaced the Autopilot to the evolution 150 and that is the only part that I kept and was compatible with the new system...sorry.

Okay so a little update on my upgrade and a few things that I learned and a question for those that installed the Mercury Gateway. Also, if anyone needs help, let me know, I spent a week doing all of this and learned a lot.

If you are running multiple displays and want the radar to display on both you will need a switch.

So what have I got done.
  • Installed a Seatalk NG network and ran backbone cable to engine room including new 5 way.
  • Replaced the autopilot course computer and fluxgate with the evolution 150 core kit.
  • Installed Digital HD Color Open array and the VCM100 power converter and ran new cable through arch.
  • Installed a RayNet Switch for the two Axioms and the Radar
  • Installed I50 Tridata which is compatible with the old sensors.
  • Installed new Raymarine VHF53
  • Installed Axiom 7 into dash panel had to order flush mount covers
  • Got new dash panels and new engine rocker switches
  • Installed the Mercury Gateway.

Next up :
  • Waiting for the 12" Axiom Plus for the main MFD area and will have to do some cutting out there. I also have the new cherry panel.
  • Install the P70r and the new radio panel.

Question for the community? Does anyone know how to get the Engine Temp data on the Axiom from the Merc Gateway? I can see the temp on vessel view mobile but it will not show on the Axiom. I called both Mercury and Raymarine Tech support and both clueless on the set up. I am thinking PGN's need to be modified somewhere.

Finally, I decided to replace all of the vinyl in the cockpit and have it all out besides the captain chair so that will be my final 2020 upgrade lol.

Wow!!!! Really really love the look and function. I will be doing the same!!! I can’t wait to see the other display installed. If you don’t mind, what has been the cost so far?

Considering the value of the boat and that we intend on keeping the boat for a decade, I think it is reasonable. Here is the estimated breakdown, which if you think about it, what some people pay to have a MFD installed. It is very advantageous to do it yourself. Also, I could have sold off the P70R as the Axiom has great evolution integration( but I already had the cut outs for the radio panel :() and could have done without the Mercury Gateway as I had Vessel view mobile installed and the gateway doesn't seem to show all of the data that I was expecting for $900 reduction.

Cost Equipment
750 New Panels, light and engine switches
700 Axiom 7 owned previously
2599 Axiom 12 Plus
1550 Digital Open Array Color HD Radar Used but like new from eBay(huge savings here as it is 4K plus new)
1399 Evolution Auto Pilot Core kit includes P70R
400 Ray53 VHF
475 I50 Tridata
450 Mercury Gateway
200 Raynet Switch Used from eBay
400 SeatalkNG cables, Radar to Raynet wire, tools(rotozip), connectors and adapters
-150 Discount on Axiom 12 Plus
-250 Evolution Rebate
-1500 Estimate value for selling Old equipment MFD, Radar, ST60+ Type 100 AP etc.
7023 Total Estimated costs after rebates, discounts and selling off old equipment

$7,000... wow!! I think that is an outstanding price. I will be doing the work myself. Like I said, I will be using your work as a roadmap. Like you said, based on what some people are paying, that is a super reasonable.

Removed my cockpit cushions and backrests yesterday. After discussion with @Mig22 thought it would be good to share on here

the main seat bottoms were straight forward, just Phillip screws.

The rear most back had 1/4” studs through the top accessible through the rear storage area. I also had to remove the the rope hangers in the storage area and a couple mounting screws to the back. There was another stud holding underneath toward the step to access the foredeck. But all pretty straight forward

The double seat by the helm, just need 7/16 open end wrench to remove the double nuts holding the arch back rest, and same Phillips screws like the other seat bottoms hold that seat bottom. The double nuts were a little tight to break loose of each other, then spin by hand.

the forward back rest (right behind the helm was the bitch....

Remove the helm seat (6 Allen head screws). On my 2000, right behind the captains seat is a 9”x9” starboard access cover to let you in the area under the cooler. You will need a deep 7/16 deep socket with a total of about 9-10” to the 1/4” ratchet.... there is 2 in this area. One on each side of the cooler. The near one is easy, probably just a standard 7/16” nut driver does it. That one on the other side of the cooler was a bear.... especially when I don’t have the tools I said will make it easier, lol

the last ones I had to remove the fiberglass that holds the seat in the starboard side near where you step to go up front. That is 2 pins underneath in the back wall, and it raises out, def makes life easier.... Once removed there is 2 1/4” studs with nuts to remove. Need a 7/16” nut driver or about 12” extension for your ratchet....

The first pic is the access hole behind the captains chair, second is a top view to show the locations of the bolts that screw through, the last shows the right side where I removed the the fiberglass panel near the step

Great stuff Chris! I did the exact same thing and getting the cockpit reupholstered and dropped it all off yesterday. I did find it easier just to remove the 4 screws underneath the captain chair and leave the post though. I even found a wasps nest where the hard to get to nuts in the side cavity for the forward back rest lol. What did they quote you to redo all of the vinyl? I figured Id stick with the stock white as I am not totally in love with the two tone everyone is doing now days.

you should be able to get your temp data in the set up screen on the Axiom. You can select what you want displayed and how you want it (i.e. number, gauge, graph). I know thats how it works in mine, I have diesels but I am using the mecury gateway to get it to the NEMA 2000 network. Once you are in the engine data screen get into the menus and you will find it. As long as the NEMA data is there you can see it on the Axiom.
