420/44 DB Owners Club

I have read through most of these posts and I have a couple of things to add and ask.
- I just fixed my screen door. What a PIA, but I removed the interior carpet threshold instead of the glass doors. It was tough to find the first screw, but finding the others was relatively easy. I manipulated /twisted the screen door enough to remove it from the salon side. Once removed, I fixed the rollers using $4 worth of parts form the hardware store. Reinstalled the same way. Works like new. It does help to have 2 people, one to hold/twist the door, the other to pop the roller on/off the track.
- Lack of storage: I built cedar shelves for the guest and stb v-berth closest. We have few hanging clothes and seemed like a better use of space. One day, I'll rip out the washer dryer and make better use of that space.
- Question: I'm doing the 1000 hr. maintenance on the mains. I've pulled and rebuilt all the coolers. In removing the heat exchanger end caps I notice my (Seaboard Marine) gaskets installed in 2018 were completely destroyed and turned into a putty like material. See pic. Has anyone else had similar experience with the Seaboard heat exchanger product? Could the pink stuff chemically react with the gasket?
BTW: the valves clearances were very much off. I'm hoping to get better performance come spring.

Yes, there is another member here that has experienced the HX end cap gasket problems you mention on his 6cta. We have discussed it between us and I had no answers for him. Sounds like one of you two guys should contact Seaboard and ask some questions. Sounds like they may have a vendor issue?

I had a deal on a 420 fall through with the 480 CE motors because I read about the over-propping/valve issue and I reached out to Cummins service and they shared the repair history (1 had been repaired and the other not). The broker and seller were, of course, not volunteering that info. This was plain lucky on my part. The Cummins tech would have also caught this, but I was not as knowledgeable and was planning to pass on the engine survey. When the motors cost about $50K each to replace, it is worth a little extra expense to make sure there are no issues.
Was the said repair due to a valve/over-propping issue?

Thank you so much and I did send Seaboard marine an email with photos this morning. I'll also look for that other member...unless you know who he was. Thanks again!

ZZ13 (Bill) He’s a fellow 400db owner.
He’s active here. He’ll most likely see this and be along shortly.

Welcome to the sbmar goo gasket club. Mine were in pretty bad shape after a year. After two years the gasket was gone with only the gasket sandwiched between two pieces of metal left intact. So after changing them every year, I switched to regular old 5” rubber gaskets. They are over twice as thick as the sbmar gaskets and 1/3 the price. Here is where I posted my picture of the start of the goo process.

I run my boat in southeast coast salt water year round. The only theory I have is I put in smx water pumps right before I started trying the sbmar gaskets. I’m wondering is the extra flow they produce “salt blasting” the gaskets. I’ve never asked sbmar about it. I’d probably get the standard “first send me 10,000 pictures of your engines from 83 different angles” response.

Bill,
Thanks for chiming in. Misery loves company. We chatted in the past too. I have lots of family in Beaufort and was looking at a houses near you at one time.
I still have the old sea water pumps, so that can't be it. I'll let the forum know what and if I hear back. I appreciate the link and I'll go ahead an get the rubber gaskets and save the hassle a replacement next year.

I remember. Good to hear from you again. Sbmar gasket kit includes the little o ring for the bolt. I happened to have a few extra of those which I used with the new rubber gasket. You’ll need to source those in addition to the 5” gasket.

Thanks and appreciate the help. BTW: They are out of stock for that gasket. ugh...

Hey everyone!! Still getting use to this forum. I know I’m replying to something completely different but I have a question about how to remove my microwave from my 44 DB. I’ve been reading about some posts from the 400 series and I think it’s a little different. Any help on this issue would be great for one reason or the other my microwave just quit. Checked all the breakers checked all the GFCI outlets and still no juice. Any help on this matter will be much greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the reply. I did look at them and the stringer water source theory seemed in-conclusive. I have it on the hard and winterized right now with the flybridge shrink-wrapped and a camper canvas over the cockpit...still getting fresh water in the bilge. Completely confused over that one.

Take some blue shop towels and some painters tape and tape some paper towels in various places to see if you can determine where it is coming from. Likely not coming from them now, but leaking freshwater fittings are very prevalent on these boats.....

Remove the trim from the around the refrigerator, remove the 4-6 screws holding the refrigerator in, and pull it out. You will find 4 screws above the refrigerator that hold the microwave in place.....been there, done that...

Thanks for the advice!! Before I go through that process is there a breaker or fuse I can check first? Breaker switch panel in salon shows no sign of tripping. All gfci outlets are also good. Stumped as to why it would just quit. It probably has less than 5 hours on it al be it 15 years old.

The only one is the breaker in the electrical panel. It controls the outlet that the microwave plugs into. If it is the Tappan Microwave/Convention Oven, it is no longer made. My turntable quit turning and could not find a proper replacement so I wound up replacing the turntable motor. That had to be customized as well.

I have a Panasonic. Hope I can find another to fit without to much hassle. Thanks again!

Sorry to hear about all the seaboard gasket failures.
Over the winter I used their products for all my after coolers and heat exchangers, now I’m going to be nervous until I service them again.

can anyone tell me what secondary fuel filter is mounted on the Generators of our 420's? I am trying to buy spare filters before going to pick up new to me boat. I've already got the main engine filters but I neglected to check what the Genny had and I am almost 10 hour drive from boat so not easy to check.
Thank you

Mark I don't think you have anything to worry about, Yours just used o rings not the same gaskets that the 480CEs used.

I've had to replace my Microwave as well. A couple things to note: 1) It's plugged in, so the plug may have come loose. 2) When you use the convection mode it gets HOT. to better vent the heat, I had to jigsaw an additional 5x8 vent hole in the top. Used a small, but sturdy, black A/C return to cover the hole/vent the oven. 3) I couldn't find an exact replacement, so had to enlarge the hole. Be careful if you go this route, as you'll need to be exact on the tolerances so it's looks good. Hope it's an easy fix.
