I placed an ad in the local paper to sell a piano for $400. The first day I get this phone call from an online service that helps hard of hearing people make phone calls by them typing and the service talks to the person being called. Well, this guy wanted me to send him details of the piano to his email address so I did and this is what transpired so far, start at the bottom of this exchange of emails. I'm trying to mess with this scammer as long as I can before he gets tired of me. I have not given him my real name, home address, or home phone. As soon as he catches on, I'm going to go to every porno site and dating service site I can find and sign up using his email address. My replies are in blue. His are in green. Any other ideas?

Do you know if they will pick it up on the weekends or just on weekdays?

Hello,

I am glad to read from you. I want to buy the (Piano). I Live in Dayton, ohio and i really need to get this right away and I am ready to pay on time. You dont have to bother yourself concerning the shipment as I have a reliable shipping agent that will take care of it. I will like my shipper to schedule a pick up immediately you get the payment confirmed.

I would have love to come for it or see it but i must let you know I am okay with it. I just want this as replacement. I will offer you extra $50 to remove the ad from the news paper to be sure you are selling this to me ok. I will be able to make payment in form of US Certified Cashiers Check that is payable in any American banks in us dollars . I will like you to let me have information of whom i should issue the payment to.Such As :

Full Name:
Address :
Phone Number: Cell and Home
Acceptance of Offer:
Final asking price:
Total Asking price plus $50:

Once I received the above information, I will go ahead with the payment so that courier service can make delivery of the payment on time. I will also issue an excess fund with the payment so that when you get the payment, you will have to deduct your exact amount and wire out the excess to my shipper so that he can be able to make the pick up. I hope i can trust you with my money .. When its time for the pick up, You will have to let me know the exact time and day my shipper can make the pick up of this item .. Your early response will be highly appreciated.

Warmest Regards

Lorabeth

I only deal with face-to-face and cash with craigslist... I get so many scammers trying this kind of stuff, it's unreal...

Here is a novel idea: Reply only thru Craig's list with: "Show up at (your address) with $400 cash, a helper and a truck to pick up the piano. Show up here for any other purpose and I'll shoot your ass." No other communication should be necessary.

Maybe I'm missing something here but why does a deaf guy need a piano?

My guess is this is one of those Nigerian scams by the looks of his first email, he no speak English too well. That and he lives in Ohio and wants to buy a piano sight unseen from Iowa. I also told him the total was $4,050.00 when the ad said $400.00 and he didn't question it.

Saddens it me taht with Obama election event being transpired recently I have had to be adjusting asking the price of the piano. Included in my responses are the additional taxation levies which will have been included.

Aksing Price: 40000.00
Accoustical Reproduction Tax (19.3%) 77020.00
Ptarmagon Tax: 320.00
Bellows Replacement Fee: 630.00

No, no I do know this guy and he is trustworthy. As a matter of fact I just sent him my bank account #'s and he is wiring $1,000,000 to me as we speak...

If you send it to me too, I'll double that number:grin:

Since he is giving you BS.....See if he will give you his mailing address to send him a good ole box of Iowa cowshit. If you need some...let me know!

The way this scam works is he sends a forged check for more than the amount of the purchase. The gullible people deposit the check and give him the excess $$$ back in cash which he promptly disappears with along with the merchandise. Your bank calls a couple of days later and gives you the bad news. You have been hosed out of the merchandise AND the excess cash.

I like the idea about putting the email adress on every porn site and spammer list.

When they ask for a phone number just give them the number of the local police commercial crimes unit.

On a serious note the problem has gotten so bad with certified/cashier checks some of the closing attorneys will not take them at the closing. The funds must be wired to their accounts.

And as far as putting his email into porn sites, you can be assured this is a dummy email address used solely for phishing. If it gets contaminated he'll just open up another email account somewhere. Don't waste your time. You'll probably wind up getting a virus by visiting the porn sites to sign him up. Move on and don't dignify a loser with a response.

THAT'S no fun.

I just replied to him asking for his address so I could set up the shipment. Something tells me I might not get a response.

Well I was wrong, he replied almost immediately, I'm not going to reply right away, don't want him to think I'm anxious or anything. Here's his latest reply to my request:

The shipping company will be coming to your own location for the pick, so you dnt have to bother yourself okay. Send me the rest of the details, so that the payment can be effected immediately okay.

Wow. I bought my SeaRay with a certified check. Stupid SeaRay dealer couldn't be bothered to give me the details for a wire transfer until 2 hours before I was planning to pick up the boat!

So I guess the intent of the scammer is to simultaneously trade a check for the piano? What if you stated that you intended to wait 10 buisness days for the check to clear before proceeding?
