The "virus" What are your thoughts

Even the clause "or prohibiting the free exercise thereof" is in question.

Slippery slope indeed. Thanks for your take on this.
Rob I am as conservative as you I think,
But Kevin’s last paragraph is most likely spot on.

Maybe, maybe not.

Again, giving up constitutional rights is a slippery slope, and in my opinion should be challenged. The government will over reach, and continue over reach unless checked. How many times have we seen government agencies brought back into line after being challenged in the courts?

And where is the checks and balances over what a Governor can declare an emergency? What if, as a far example, a state suddenly one day declares "climate change" as an emergency, and declares all "non essential" internal combustion engines be confiscated and destroyed, and illegal. How many here will give up their property in said state? Keep in mind, a legislature and a governor could use climate change as a precursor to public health, and they could make powerful arguments to their behalf.

Have you guy's seen the articles of yesterday? Tampa and New Orleans had churches with 500+ people attending in each of them...….WTH??? I think it's time to get to the BUG-OUT Searay boys......:D
A church near me held services on March 15th. As of the end of last week 40 of the 80 people who attended are sick.

In order to restrict a constitutional right the government has to show an imperative government interest. A viral pandemic most likely qualifies. But they have to narrowly tailor their solution. Perfectly reasonable to ban large gatherings. The Pastor will loose. Now, put him in the public square we he attracts a crowd of 10-15, you may get a different answer.

And here you can go to Walmart and shop with a 100 or more people in the store. Also, you can go to WestMarine where there is no limit on customers in the store.

Likely qualifies? I could think of at least a dozen situations the government could use for the same purpose, but people would be up in arms over it.

Accidents happen all the time.... at least when you drink Miller light you can remember them :)
I can relate about remembering. :D

No you really can't because each state purpose is different and subject to strict scrutiny by the courts. That's why I said "likely qualifies."

You know. Screw some you you guys. Some of us a calorically challenged. We have to drink the miller lites, Utras, and the like. Although I usually start with one or two "heavy" craft brews before I switch. :)
I look like buda now, however you may need the hard stuff.

Guys, in regards to the Constitutional issue, I have my opinion and you have yours. I have two former classmates on SCOTUS and honestly I trust their judgment and interpretation better than my own and pretty much anyone else's. I enjoyed studying it and am happy to debate. Yet, I don't want to derail this thread. Get the issue up to them and let them take a stab at it.....

To the point about this specific Priest / Pastor, Of course he will have his day in court and I support his opportunity to defend. I'm just simply stating (again) that I hope his attorney uses a better defense than the Constitution.

Some of us believe the constitution is the ultimate defense. That's why we defend it.

Not sure how it's derailing the thread, since the thread is "Virus, what are your thoughts". And yes, I hope he prevails.

Take care.
