Bringing the boat home

Gale warning today?? Guess you are sitting tight in the marina.
We waited a while to see what’s what. Fueled up, winds died firm a bit so we stuck our nose out. Looked good so we headed north with bail outs at Atlantic City and Masasquan. Ran 25 mph til we tuned north near Barnegat light. Right now taking 3-5 footers on the nose and slowed to 15-16.

You got a following sea or are you heading right into it?

Starting to make sense. One last stupid question. How do I know if an MMSI is already assigned to my VHF or not? I just acquired my boat 2 weeks ago.
You can check the radio. It will be in there under DSC settings. If it does it’s registered to someone else and important to get you info associated with it. If registered via boat us they can help you claim it. Or if you know the owner ask them to release the number to you.

Perfect, got it now. thank you. Be careful out there. I'll be heading South thru there on Tuesday hopefully, weather permitting.

If your vhf does have a MMSI number assigned, you will need the previous owner to “release” the number. This is done through BoatUS as well. The registration BoatUS keeps contains the vessel name and contact info (so the USCG can get a hold of someone if the distress function is activated). When you acquire a used vhf with MMSI the number does not change in the radio, your contact info (as well as new Boat name) over writes the previous owners in the BoatUS/USCG database.

Nice to have the glass enclosed cabin in seas like that!

Awesome trip, thanks for taking us along. I sit here in awe on the time you guys made.

Man that thing is going to need a bit of a wash when you wrap up this trip.
It looks like you've had a great run & I gotta say I'm impressed with the speed and fuel burns I've seen along the way.

It has been really neat watching this adventure. Looks like you're almost there! Glad it was a safe trip.

Brad, I've followed your trip from day one and it was a bit of joy watching you but also a bit of sadness that I won't be doing any more trips like that since we sold the boat.

Enjoy your Back Cove and keep posting pics.

We’re officially home. Got to the dock yesterday around 11:15 Am.

We left Liberty Landing marina at 7 AM. Which ended up to be too early. Said goodbye to Captain Rusty as he Ubered to Newark Airport, got some nice shots of the city, Lady Liberty, and headed up the East River. After 5 days of having Rusty look over my shoulder it felt a little strange to be truly in command of the boat. I was certainly prepared though.

Very smooth sailing up the river, just had to dodge the morning commuter ferries. Hell Gate was like glass, no problem. Then we entered Long Island Sound. This is where we had probably the most uncomfortable ride of the trip. Winds were strong from the north, creating 4/5 foot, short period beam seas in the Sound and lots of sideways motion. We slowed to 18 mph to not to be pitched about too much.

About half way into our trip I got a text from my daughter. “Did you check tides? Looks low when you get in”. Ugh, THATS why I was going to sleep in. We were set to arrive at 10:00am, exactly at dead low tide. The slip is shallow so we need at least an hour on either side to be able to get in or out.

We were just passing Huntington Harbor so made a hard right to poke around and burn off some time. After a little sight seeing we headed back out to resume the last leg at a leisurely 16 mph. That pace gave us enough leeway to arrive with enough water under our keel, and it worked. We got to the dock to find my daughter waiting excitedly on the dock and eager to help tie up the new Jennifer B.

We quickly got things squared away, packed our gear and headed to the car. Unfortunately the water has not been turned on yet so a good wash will have to wait a bit.

Oh, and the weather. We arrived just to have a hard freeze warning. How ungracious! It was cold enough that my wiper washer nozzles froze up for a while. Come on, spring!

Some trip metrics:

Last shot with Rusty. He’s proudly wearing his Sea Ray jacket, and all the clothes he had because it was so cold. Plus, a Back Cove hat I gave him.

This big Sea Ray? We pulled in and @Capt. Rusty Higgins glances over and says, hey I remember building that boat. Has an unusual hull color, only one ever made. Sure enough I walk over and it has a blue-green gel coat hull. This guy’s memory is ridiculous. He’s a great captain, and lived up to every bit of the reputation that’s been built up here.
