1500 Miles, MA to FL, Another Adventure Done...

FYI:

The 2001-2006 Suburban 2500 4wd had tow ratings up to 12,000# with the gas 8.1L.

Even the 6.0L w/ 4.10 gears/4wd was also rated right at 10,000# for a few years. (2000, 2001?)

Great tow vehicle.

I had heard that for 2009 they dropped the 4.10 axles, thus dropping the tow rating.

My '07 has the 4.10 axle with a 9600 lb rating. I went to the web site for Chevy, http://www.chevrolet.com/vehicles/2009/suburban3-4ton/features.do, they don't show the 4.10 as an option, but they still list it with a 9600 tow capacity. Interesting.

This is my concern. My lease is up in 8 months and I might not be able to get a new one '10 with the same or more tow capacity. Then I'm screwed, because I'll have to get something other than a Suburban, or hang onto this one for a few more years hoping they come back around. :smt013

Chuck,

If you can't get the 4.10 axle, you can always put them in later. Randy's Ring & Pinion is good place to buy from - good prices and reliable. You'll need to re-flash the ECM, but that can be done easily, as well, with a power programmer. Plus, it will improve the engine's efficiency, giving more power while creating less heat. It also improves MPG - although that will be relatively insignificant.

I'm really bummed they "shelved" the 4.5L diesel - that would have been a great tow vehicle. It makes power equal to the 1st gen 6.6L Duramax. But there is A LOT of power left to get out it, too! And, it can be done safely.
