1980 470 cuts out without key in on position........

Hey guys, Stumped on this one. The engine (1980 470 Mercruiser) will only run if I keep the key turned to the on position. Installed new plugs and wires along with a new fuel pump. Engine fires right up but cuts out along with gauges when you release the key. Any thoughts? Betting it is a wiring issue but I am not sure where to start. Any advice or suggestions of a direction to lean would be greatly appreciated!

do you mean the start position? the ballast resistor or the resistor wire is bad. it runs from the choke to the coil.

Thanks Doctur! I will take a look this afternoon when I get to the house. I was thinking short of some kind so I will check out the resistor wire and make sure she is not corroded, broken or disconnected. Thanks again for your help.............
