Mercruiser 3.0
Hi everyone, Im new here. I bought my first boat last summer with the money I saved from babysitting. I got really into wakeboarding about 2 years ago. I started to learn behind our family's patio boat but there was no wake to progress on. Occasionally I would be able to get to wakeboard behind my uncles old ski nautique but it wasnt as often as I would like. So I made it my goal to buy my own boat before I turned 19. And thats exactly what I did. After convincing my parents, and searching for a good boat in my price range I found the "almost" perfect one. I say almost because it needed some TLC and interior work. Which I didnt mind because I love a project. So last May I bought a 1988 Sea Ray Seville. It has the 3.0L mercruiser inboard/outboard engine.

When I first got it, started writing up my list of things to get done. My uncle, who knows alot about boats, helped me with what to look for when buying it. He advised me that the engine was good, no mechanical problems. Just mainly cosmetic interior stuff.

First thing I did was I ripped out the two lounge seats. The upholstery was all ripped and cracked and not even in tact in places. I purchased 2 new lounge seats from Overtons. Once I got the seats out, I bought some dark green indoor/outdoor carpet from Home Depot. Laid that down and put it in the side spots. Then I put in the new lounge seats. They say a little too tall so I cut down the bases about 4" and then mounted them.

Next came the long and hard part. Reupholstering all the front bow cushion, the jump seats, engine cover, and the flip up thing. My mom is really good at sewing and we have tackled other upholstering projects on my quads and stuff. We bought some marine white vinyl and dark green vinyl and made our new seats.

After we finished the inside, I wanted to get rid of the funky yellow decal that was on the side of the boat when I first got it. So I found a really neat Sea Ray decal on ebay. It looked like the graphics that you would find on an expensive wakeboard boat. But since I dont have that kind of money, I thought this was the best way.

Still got some more plans for it this summer. New cd player and other odds and ends.

Let me hear your thoughts and comments...thanks

Great job!! Congrats on the big purchase and I hope you are able to enjoy your new toy for a long time!! And welcome to CSR!

hey thanks...i'm hoping to bring it from my lake house in pa to nj this weekend. that way i can do some odds and ends and a good cleaning. get it ready for summer!!

Well done. With your ability to determine what you wish to accomplish and your ability to actually follow through with it I can see the following words in your future.

You're Hired...

Very Nice

Nice job! And good call on getting rid of that yellow decal!!!

Well done! I wish I was that ambitious when I was your age.

I agree with Dennis. How did that yellow decal get there anyway? :wow: It looks much nicer after what you did.

Have fun!

Don't let the government find out that you desired something, then actually worked to raise funds for the purchase, then used your own valuable time to repair/replace/upgrade. This totally undermines their general position that you should have been owed a boat and some other person who has unfairly and selfishly obtained more income than other people, should have to provide it for you.

Really, I am proud of you and the boat looks great- You're going to go places in life!

When I was your age I did the same thing, and to this day still proud of what I did with that first boat, and you should be too!!

Nice job!

thanks for all the great comments you guys! as for the yellow decal, I think one of the previous owners put it there. Funny thing is, after I bought it and did all the interior work(the yellow decal still there) i had it docked at our lake's little island and i was out on the jet ski. When I came back, my parents said that the previous owner came by and would have only known it used to be his because of the decal. lol. he was really impressed with how it looked and all the work i did to it.

as far as working hard and saving my money to buy something i want, its always been my nature. I dont know if its because I'm a girl (bet you didnt see that coming) or what. But it really took a lot of convincing my parents. but once i got the ok, oh man, i was soo excited. I was more than happy to get a boat that needed some fixing up. I think it really makes it your own when you can work on it and make it how you invision it.

I'm hoping to bring it back to NJ this weekend so I can work on getting it cleaned up and maybe installing a cd player. its hard to work on it when it stays at my PA house. I want to get it looking all good so when my uncle launches all the other boats, mine is ready to go!!!

I saw it coming (that you are female) after the babysitting comment. Not too many 18 year old boys out there babysitting. Well done!

Top notch job kiddo!!!

Be proud of what you have accomplished and make sure everyone you let accompany you takes as good care of it as you do.

Be that meticulous about every aspect of her and she'll take care of you for a long time.

Congrats!!!

Let me expand on this and share a short story.

A friend of mine went with me and my family on our madien voyage after spending lots time and money cleaning our new-to-us boat up and waxing and polishing her to near perfection.

We had a great day and he showed us around the lake and we anchored and had lunch on board.

Upon docking at the end of the day I noticed some small marks and scratches in the bow near the anchor locker. I asked him (he anchored) if he hit the boat with the anchor and his reply was, "Even if I did you have a nice enough boat and don't sweat the small stuff."

That comment was enough for me. He didn't understand that if I left it like that, the whole boat would be a mess in no time. He got upset because I was upset and spent the next hour cleaning up the marks and scratches.

Lesson: I'm not sure I want anyone on my boat that doesn't respect her or want to take care of her. I personally have spent too much time and money to let things like that go.

Take care of her and keep her up and you'll have many enjoyable and proud days on the water!

totally agree with your story. i'm so cautious on what people do when there on my boat. i usually like to do everything myself. that way its on me if something happens. also, i know more about the boat and the way it should be and handle than my family. after all, i spent a lot of time working on it and putting my hard work into it.

lets cut the crap, where can i get a babysitting job that pays like that?

Good work man, now go enjoy!

haha, well i got paid $10 an hour. and then there was special occasions like birthdays, oh yea and i graduated high school. so that helped a lot too. but i dont babysit the kids anymore because they are getting older and dont need someone to watch them all the time. good thing i got the boat when i did haha.

Nice job, My first boat (i was seventeen) was a 1960 14 ft. Bocraft with a 1956 johnson 30 hp.( i was born in 1957) Wow i can still remember that feeling of exploring the patapsco river and the upper chesapeake bay that first summer!!! That motor was bullit proof. LOL it had external knobs for the spark advance and fuel mixture. he he... it might have been a 6 volt

Beautiful job!!! I have the same boat with the 4.3L. I hope to get it looking as good as yours. Keep up the great work.
