Sigh!!

I love my boat! However, I noticed that there isn't any leg room when standing while I'm driving! CRAP! My calves were rubbing the seat the entire time!
Has anyone found the same thing? Any modifications to help with this???

Wow, I see that from '81 to '92 the issue has been the same: No leg room! I have this issue and was just talking to the admiral about this yesterday. It would be great if you could move the seat back, say 3 inches, but then the jump seats would have no support. Been tossing a couple of more ideas around as well, like trying to figure out how to make it adjustable, so you could slide it back when the jump seats were not in use. Or pull the jump seats, and turn the inside into a storage area.

And if ya think there's no leg room, it gets worse for me, I have size 14 feet, JUST enough room to fit between the seat and the wall underneath the helm!!!

I sit the whole time???? It's a cruiser not an offshore racing boat! Standing just looks funny when not racing. Just bustin on ya.....Mike.

LOL I like to be able to see all around me, and when I sit, that's not possible :(

Ok....sit on two throwable seat cushions. One should be within arms reach to begin with. I did that as a kid to see over the bow, Mike.

Funny that you say that...I have one that I was sitting on and it helped a little
Going to look for my other one and see if that helps!

In my area you almost have to stand to avoid the crab pots! My 270 has a slider on the helm bench - wonder if that could be retrofitted back to the earlier models?

The helm bench back is also the mid seat back...it's all one piece. (this dirty thing isn't my boat, it's just for reference lol)
If you look at the very bottom of the seat back bottom, you can see the mid berth "ceiling". The helm seat base is bolted to this.

The back of the seats are one piece. Not sure how a slider would work unless I replace the entire seating system (I do like the idea though)

I've got a '91 270 and I've always had the same issue. I've tried to engineer in my head a way to split the seat and have some sort of bolster to flip up while standing (which is most of the time). Havent quite figured it out yet.

My next winter project is to replace some rotted wood in the seat base/storage. While rebuilding and upholstering, I plan to take a stab at a redesign. If I come up with anything, I'll let you know.

That would be great, thanks!

Hi KarenS
I docked to our local fishing boat harbour this weekend and noticed a Searay 31 badged boat of the same vintage next to us. The helm seat station had been divided into a two seat configuration for the passengers and a lift up single seat for the helm. Our boat is a 1992 Searay 270 with the same issue of having to raise the helm position for cruising...
I was pretty impressed with the configuration, and we think we may well incorporate it into our upgrade...
Cheers

My guess is that both the helm and rear facing passenger seat would have to be completely removed and replaced? Is that what they did?

The rear facing seats had been left in their original state. The front seat which seats three adults had been remodelled into two front facing passenger seats. It looked like the upholstery had been redone to reduce the seating arrangement into two seats. The helm seat was a mini pedestal skipper seat which used a gas struct to allow the seat to sit flush with the passenger seats or rise to allow for the helm seat to provide better viewing when cruising. At the moment we use a bolster seat on the front facing seats to give better vision. This caused me a problem the other day when my daughter had forced the bolster seat all the way to my side, I was docking the boat and could not get the shift into reverse when approaching the dock due to the bolster seat blocking the movement of the shift control!
Cheers

I was looking at the seat cushion itself. Seems that there is about a 5" overhang from the edge of the piano hinge to the end of the cushion. I wonder if I can make the cushion narrower? hmmmm
