Hello, I am new to this site and I am about to purchase a 1999 Searay 340 Sundancer. I am doing the sea-trial tomorrow.. The boat has twin 7.4 mpi horizon (380 hp) engines (V-drives).
I would like to know what should expect in cruise speed and wide open throttle. also at what RPM's... I have read that it should be approx. 6mph faster than the 310's...

Thanks in advance....

Hi CJM Check out Boattest.com (http://www.boattest.com/Partners/Partner-Main.aspx?lp_id=32&Videoid=584&p=0&s) Remember these numbers are like the EPA stickers on new car windows 'actual numbers may vary'. If the hull or props are fuzzy with marine growth, if there is big wind, or steep chop, how is the boat loaded, etc. More critical than the actual numbers is how smooth the engines run, whether they overheat or fail to idle nicely while docking. Has the exhaust upgrade been done? What do the oil and coolant look like? V-Drive trans fluid? Does everything work? Tach? sync gauge? voltage gauges? What about the equipment? Fridge, generator, wiper motors, winshield vent, water pump, water heater, head systems?? Navigation electronics? Auto pilot? Radio, TV, these can be complex boats! Pretend you are going to try and sell the boat tomorrow. What would the new buyer find? Running Lights? AC/Heat systems?? 1999 is not a new boat and there will be stuff that does not work. You need to know what it is to evaluate the cost of getting the boat where you want her to be when you are ready to go out on the water.

I have seen the boat-test results, but it's not a good comparison, bigger beam, outdrives, 8.1s,,, I have read that models (98-03) with 7.4 mpi 310hp will cruise in low 20's and max at about 30... I have also seen a youtube video (with 380hp horizons) that claims cruise at 27mph @3300rpm, max - 41mph @ 4800rpm. Should I expect the same?

The boat has a clean bottom with fresh paint.... This sea-trial is part of a survey.... it will be calm, light load,3people

A few months ago my wife and I purchased a '94 - 330 Sundancer with twin 7.4's and it flies! That's all I'm going to say :) We just did a trip and cruised around 25mph according to my garmin and I had her up to 30-32mph and not pushing it anymore because of the fuel usage and no need to push it that hard :) Hope this helps!

Okay, I wet on the sea-trial today with a surveyor. Cruise - 26mph@3300rpm, WOT- 36mph@4500rpm , we were out for about 20min's & then the oil pressure went down to 20psi on port engine. The captain tried to throttle down to idle, the starboard went down to 700rpm but the port would not go below 1100rpm (oil pressure stayed at 20). We had to open the hatch an manually push the cable to bring the rpm's down... Once he increased the throttle, the rpm's went back up, but he could not bring it back down again (had to push the cable) oil press stayed at 20..... (We checked the oil level and it was okay), no leaks. The broker is going to have a mechanic look at it tomorrow.......

Any thoughts??

Was the boat sitting for a while?
Corrosion on the cable ?

It was laid up all winter, first time out... Pre-purchase sea-trial..
