I have very limited visibility to my stern and swim platform and I'm trying to find a 2 way hands free headset that would ease communication between my wife and I during docking.

It would be nice to hear a splash incase something bad would happen :)

Looking for suggestions on model/brand. I've seen pricing low and astronomical.

pair of bluetooth headsets and have her call you on the phone just prior to getting to the dock

A definite simple solution there. Sometimes the most simple is the most overlooked. Still curious on dedicated headsets...

I like simple. no need to carry anything else plus the bluetooth headsets can fit in your pockets. Plus you always have your phone around.

We bought a pair of headsets for just the situation you're describing. They're voice activated so no 'push to talk' buttons, the sound is very clear and loud enough to hear over the sounds of the boat and we're very happy with then.

Here's a shot of GW wearing her set while we're in one of the locks on the Columbia.

I can't get you the name and model number because they're on the boat, but I can get that tomorrow if you want.

I supplied my brother in law with Uniden units with the hands free headsets, I think from memory we set either 3 or 4 units up, with rechargeable docking stations.

He has a 58' enclosed flybridge, so there was 2 issues, visibility and being able to hear.

Ditto on the cellphone/bluetooth headsets. I bought two Bose BT headsets and I call my wife on her cellphone when we are docking. Plus, we don't look like we work for NASA and we're about to land the space shuttle. I also have it to use for other calls so it's not just a single use item.

because you would look silly

Good idea, sometimes I can't hear the VHF... I wonder why they never added a headset option on the radios like on airplanes

I went and added a powered amplifying speaker from radio shack under the dash for the VHF issue, works great.
Our old VHF had a hailer that worked as a microphone too. It worked great with my daughter working the deck lines.
Can't find one anymore, i like the blue tooth cell phone ideas, think we will have to try that route now.

An alternative solution could be the Simrad RS35/RS90 VHF with wireless handsets + headset. They support intercom function and have a range of about 300' - I don't know if they will go truly hands free - but they might. I'll have to investigate. :) Then you will also be able to hear the harbour master shout at you :)
