I hope I can get some help with the starting problem I am having with my 2001 Sea Ray 180 Bowrider with a Mercruiser Alpha 3.0 engine. Engine starts cold great and runs fine. However, if I turn it off for a short time, then try and restart it, nothing happens. That is, the gauges move, but there is no sound from the engine, i.e., it doesn't turnover. Give it 1.5 - 2 hours of sitting, if I turn the key again, the engine starts right up. I can't figure out what is wrong. It appears that something is overheating and thus will not allow the boat to start. Once it cools down, everything is okay. Note I have replaced the ignition switch, battery, and control console (the boatyard originally thought it was the neutral safety switch connections in the console). It is tough for the boatyard to fix as by the time I get the boat to them, time has passed and the boat will once again start right up.

Note that I was told it may be the ignition coil is getting too hot and will start again when it cools, but I'm not sure.

A bad coil wouldn't explain the engine not turning over. I'd start with the starter slave solenoid.
