My family is ready to move up to a bigger boat, so I'm reluctantly putting my 270 AJ up for sale. I'm hoping a new owner can get as much joy out of her as we have. She's really clean - my wife has yelled at me for years that I take better care of the boat than the house (or her!).

The 270 AJ is a great boat: very versatile, easy to drive, easy to care for. Perfect for overnight trips, hanging out on the hook, or chasing down the stripers and blues.

    It's listed on Yachtworld: https://www.yachtworld.com/boats/2006/Sea-Ray-270-Amberjack-3244926/Setauket/NY/United-States?refSource=standard listing#.W4WwN84zqUk

Located on Long Island, NY (Setauket - North Shore)

    Good Morning,

All though your boat is very nice. Its doesnt have the fishing package that most fishermen would want. (Arch and Live well.) I bought my boat only because it had those features. Without them its just another cruiser.

    Good Luck

I would disagree. I bought mine specifically because it doesn't have the fishing package. It cruises well for a family but also fishes well because of the layout. My father in law's 270 DA frankly stinks for fishing.

I agree with b_arrington. A 270 or 290 AJ is on our radar as a possible next boat. If we do go that way it will be without the arch.

I’m not familiar with the Amberjack. Some of it is identical to my 260 Sundancer.

How was is marketed and how is the space where the aft Bed is located utilized?
    Thanks

    Well, you asked for it!

The Amberjack series was basically Sea Ray's effort to appeal to customers that want a Sea Ray cruiser with the associated comforts, but also like to fish. The DA layout with the side lounger and other fixed seating doesn't really work so well for fishing. The AJ combines comfortable cruising amenities and seating with a flexible fishing-centric layout and features. The Amberjack brand existed in the 80's and was revised in the early 2000's. In the latest iteration there were 4 models:
    • 340 AJ. Twin straight shafts. 2001-2003. The 330 EC was EXTREMELY similar - basically the 330 EC became the 340 AJ.
    • 290 AJ. Twin I/O or v-drive. 2000-2010.
    • 270 AJ. Single I/O. 2005-2009.
    • 250 AJ. Single I/O. 2006-2007.

The 2005-2009 270 AJ is indeed based on the hull of the 260 DA of the same era. It shares the same hull, cabin layout, helm (mostly), and basic mechanicals.

Where it diverges is mainly in the deck layout; two AJ layouts were offered. Each had back-to-back seating (lays flat, with storage under) to port and a folding bench seat across the transom. Padded bolsters line the coamings, an insulated draining fishbox (storage) is in the transom behind the folding seat. Rod boxes are built into the cockpit walls. Also, I think the cockpit is quite a bit larger the 260 DA of the same years. The AJ's cockpit/deck space is pushed all to the aft of the hull and it has a bolt-on swim platform. The DA's cockpit area is shorter and has an integral swim platform.

The "standard" AJ configuration was a single swivel captains chair at the helm. Usually this was optioned with the fishing package: bait prep station right behind the helm seat (livewell, sink, and bait prep area), tubular arch with rocket launchers, 4 rod holders, and raw water washdown.

The "optional" layout was far less common. It replaced the single captains chair with back-to-back seating (provides an extra seat) and eliminated the fishing package. However, this layout still provides good fishability with the open layout, folding transom seat, fishbox, rod storage, etc. It also made it more of a family-oriented sport cruiser with the extra seat. IMO, if you don't use live bait you won't miss the livewell / prep area.

The 270 AJ cabin is basically identical to the 260 DA. The major difference is the aft cabin. For 2005-2006 there was none but was optional in 2007. In lieu of the sleeping space, a MASSIVE full-beam storage compartment is provided. It is accessed via a hatch in the cockpit sole between the seats. I can't overstate the size and utility of the storage area. You can easily climb in there and lay down with plenty of room to spare. Some of the stuff I have in there with space left over: 2 towable tubes, a blow-up paddle board, padded lounge seat, tacklebox, tool box, several big pool noodles, a bunch of extra life jackets, misc. maintenance fluids, buckets, bottled water and sodas, and a 4-foot plastic kiddie pool. When my kids and nephews / nieces were younger they got too cold swimming. I would put the pool in the big open cockpit and fill it up with heated water so they could splash around in it.

A couple other differences vs. the 260 DA: the optional AC was located in the under-cockpit storage space. The fresh water tank is located under the v-berth on the centerline vs. the engine space. This provides better balance and handling. The 270 AJ had a 100 gallon fuel tank vs. 84 for the 260 DA. I can tell you that 15% more range is huge.

To sum up: Same hull form and forward cabin / head. 260: dedicated cruiser; not for fishing. 270 AJ: cruiser for owners that want to fish. Standard layout - more fishing. Optional layout: fishing and family.

The price is listed in the Yachtword link at the top of the first post. I didn't include it in the post in case the price changed after the initial post (which it did), and because after a time a post here can't be edited. For convenience, here it is again. That link also has 50+ photos.

Sale fell through after successfully completing a survey and sea trial (which went great) when the buyer backed out for reasons unknown. Back to square one.

Boat's in the water and ready for a new owner.

It’s pretty shitty move to highjack someone else’s paid for sale listing for your own benefit.
