I was suppose to take delivery of our new 2008 36 sedan bridge on Friday, but was told today Wednesday that one of the transmissions was making a winding noise and further investigation showed metal chips in case. They are shipping new trans. overnight and should be good for Saturday delivery. Should I be concerned at all with any long term problems once the new transmission is in ?

Thanks for any thoughts.

None.........you will never know it. My only suggestion would be to insist that your dealer repaint all the bolt heads, scratches and finger prints left behind after the change.

Congratulations....that is a great boat. My only thoughts are: Are they also replacing the trans cooler and the lines to it or flushing the lines and cooler. Metal has a way of finding its way around.

Sorry to hear about the tranny trouble. I am sure they will get it fixed right. I assume you purchased from Bassett and I have had great service from them so far. Where will you be keeping the boat?

I truly second this post. If they found metal shavings that means they have worked there way all through the cooling system. Its best to replace the lines and cooler. Although if they are flushed I would make sure it's done properly.
If it was my boat the cooler and lines would be replaced. I would also put 20 or so hours on it and run an oil sample just to be sure the oils clean( provided cooling system was flushed).

Count yourself lucky the dealer did the right thing up front. I had a similar problem when Mr. Goodwrench built me a bad 8.1 that needed replacement. I used the boat for the season and the engine was swapped out over the winter. Know your feeling of disappointment. Crusader also paid to have everything related repainted and it looked brand new after the re-install. Enjoy the new boat.
BTW, look carefully for any gel coat or other damage related to removing and replacing heavy equipment. I had a small gel coat chip from a tool that was dropped on the cockpit floor. That was also repaired perfectly under the warrenty.

Spoke again to the dealer and for them when ever this happens it is protocal to change the cooler and the lines. I have all the confidence in the world with this dealer and am confident things will work out. Thanks again for all your thoughts.

We are out of Deep River as well. What dock do you have?

If you can, make a small scribe in the items to be replaced in an area where you can find it, where it doesn't do any damage, and where it would otherwise not be noticed. You will squelch any questions in your mind about whether or not the work was really done.

I'm wondering why all the suspicion?

Sea Ray is warrantying the repair so its in the best interest of the dealer to replace anything he can talk Customer Service at Sea Ray into. Master dealers get full retail for the labor and Sea Ray gives them the parts. Doing more work means more income and no more cost, in this case.

Best of luck with you new boat. Your problem seems to be under control. After you get a few hours on it please repost and let us know how everything went

The (potential) problem is not Sea Ray, or the dealer. The reason to do something like this is to be sure that the technician didn't cut a corner (worst case) or that something simply got overlooked in the press of commerce (best case).

Before I get pounded on this, I have the utmost respect for technicians. I understand the training and tools necessary, the investment, the hazardous conditions, and the lack of pay and respect that is endemic in the industry (both car and boat). The overwhelming majority are doing exactly what they say they are doing...because they have learned that the best long term policy is to do so. However, marking a part doesn't take much time, gives you piece of mind, and a reference point for future discussions if need be.
