Hi All,
I'm new to this forum, but I just wanted to chime in here on my experience with my brand new 2008 330 Sundancer. I previously had a Meridian 381 fly bridge, but I had to trade that in because I was a nervous wreck when my two year old was on the boat now that she can walk.

The express style of the dancer allows me to always have eyes on the cabin door regardless of if we are underway or at anchor.

First, the good - I am so incredibly impressed with the expertise of my sales and service department of my dealer. They have responded immediately to the (unfortunate) multitude of problems I have had with the boat.

The biggest problem I have with the boat is that I love it in spite of its issues. It handles like a dream, sips gas (inboards, not I/O), and just loves to run. The refinements inside and the various touches reinforce the notion that this is a boat made by boaters for boaters.

Now, the bad news - there is nothing more frustrating to see a company so over-deliver on a product like they have on the 330 Sundancer in all of the most difficult areas, i.e. design, powerplant, ammeneties, etc., only to negate all that goodwill with stupid errors that would be easy to fix or prevent in the first place.

The following is the punch list I have delivered to my (incredible) service department. They have had to spend dozens of hours and probably thousands of dollars fixing problems that should not be present in a factory-new boat.

1. Fabric in cockpit discoloring at edges - looks like glue seeping through.
2. ChartPlotter would not accept card.
3. Replaced with new chart plotter that would reset every time we hit a moderately-sized wave. Finally fixed last week and have not had problems.
4. Canvas leaked like a sieve. Service is writing Sea Ray re: replacement or adjustment of canvas pieces.
5. Windlass Switches wired backwards - out is in and in is out.
6. Windlass hangs or does not even pull in or let out chain.
7. Anchor line fouls in windlass and is chafed.
8. Aft electrical compartment door will not stay closed. To even get it to close, it must be slammed.
9. Swim platform speakers inop.
10. Holding tank gauge only shows empty - visually checked tank to be about 3/4 full and this isn't registering on the gauge.
11. Entry door takes Herculean strength to open and close.
12. Numerous leaks into cabin - likely because so much got through canvas, but Service suspects they will have to remove windshield and bow rails and re-caulk everything.
13. Various interior lights inop
14. Isen-glass(sp?) is already showing signs of wear and zipper indentations from improper shipping/storage from factory or showroom.
15. Water leaking from shower valve - this had to be 'fixed' twice.
16. head door handle loose - had to be adjusted twice after first time it wouldn't shut against door jam.
17. Flexiteek in head has air voids underneath - possibly allowing moisture to accumulate in there and rot out the floor.
18. Auxiliary audio input at helm is inop - the one in the cabin works like a dream.
19. Speedo inaccurate - differential of GPS is a good 10mph off.
20. VHF Antenna had bad connection - could not xmit.
21. Grill would not turn on - had to reset GFI
22. Owners manual totally helpless when it comes to defining what switch does what, where certain items are stored (i.e. salon dining table pole), etc.
23. Microwave display literally peeling off
24. Feedback 'noise' visually and audibly on TV when watching DVD and text, such as the credits, are on screen
25. Bad feedback noise in cockpit speakers when listening to radio and A/C is running.

Now there are a few things I want to stress here. The dealership is been a treat to work with and overall the boat is still a dream come true. But as you see above, while none of the items are an absolute killer, taken in their totality it shows a lack of attention to detail that is frustrating to find in a quarter-million dollar boat. Any of the above gripes could have, and should have been found and fixed at the factory or at least on the dealership's initial receipt of the boat.

Instead, I am stuck playing detective finding all of these gripes myself and then taking the time to report them and having the inconvenience of not using the boat while it is being worked on...

So there's my two-cents for those of you considering buying an 08 330 - it's a great boat, but ensure you are given ample time to conduct a thorough shakedown before wandering away from the service department :)

It always amazes me to hear these stories, and yet, they continue to do well on the JD Powers surveys. It's too bad that the Japanese don't sell boats here. Our companies probbly wouldn't last a day.

Wow x2!

Our '08 330 had a few "minor" issues, but like you, our Marina and rep has been very responsive. I am shocked at your list.

Of all you mention, the only issue we have is a substantial amount of water penetration in the cockpit from a less than acceptable canvas. We need to remove ALL cockpit carpet when leaving the boat in case of rain, or they would be soaked. We are chaning out the entire canvas this winter to include a camper top and our hope is that this will solve this issue.

Other than that, we had a few minor issues upon delivery, but nothing that was not and could not be fixed within an hour or so.

We too are pretty much endeared to the boat. 8.1 Horizons with V Drives and bow and stern thrusters are a dream match. The boat looks, runs and is amazing.

I wish you luck with your fix ups, perhaps you got the one that was done late Friday afternoon or early Monday morning. Too bad, I appreciate how this can rock your confidence in the overall boat.

Hang in there and here's to hoping this all gets addresed for next season.

Welcome aboard, You might want to update your signature section with your boat/location info.

I don't know about the Japanese thing..One thing I've learned whether it's new cars or new boats is that the first year of a new model change always has the most problems. Another reason I like to buy slightly used besides paying a far less price due to depreciation, is that most of the problems are fixed and worked out by the time you purchase it...

I'm sure you will get to be very good friends with the service manager and he will do everything possible to get things fixed as soon as possible. Once you get thru it all, you will really love the boat!

About the only thing you said that really surprises me is " it sips gas" Outdrives or not. The rest can and should be dealt with fairly easily. You will find issues no matter what the brand is. The good thing is that you have a good relationship with your dealer so that helps, give them the time to fix it and continue to enjoy. SB

Welcome. I think the 330DA is the perfect size and like you said over-delivers in design and performance. It is a sharp looking boat.

Please define "sips gas." You should be getting 0.7-0.8 mpg at cruise and 60 GPH at WOT with 8.1s with V-drives. That's gulping gas like a whale gulps water. Maybe you mean relative to your prior boat it is more efficient.

Congrats on your new 330, it is a beautiful boat !!

Our 2008 Sundancer also "sips" gas......a whole lot of gas, but I have to admit, it sips less gas than my previous 06 Amberjack 290 with MAG 350 V-drives.

I haven't yet tested the windless...I will put that on my list for my next day on the boat.

With the canvas issue, is it really a bad fit, or is it like my brand new, custom canvas that leaked like it wasn't there? I sprayed 303 fabric protectant on every seam on the inside of the canvas. I used almost a whole bottle which costs about $16. I thought it was expensive until the next time it rained - TIGHT AS A DRUM!!!!!!!!

I couldn't believe it. I haven't even applied another drop since.

We had a list like that. Overall I think there were 38 items on the punch list ranging from minor problems to major issues. At least you aren't dealing with a 2" list to port with yours.

I agree on the quality control on all the little stuff. So much money and good will could be saved on the front end during construction rather than the countless man hours the service dept has had to put into our boat on the back end, at considerable cost to someone. I guess it's called dealer support from the factory and job security for the service dept.

In dealing with all the warranty items, I have had the same experience with our service dept so far, nothing but help and quality work. The next owner will get one heck of a deal, a perfectly running boat without issues and the benefit of depreciation.

Hey Spimik - I don't know if you've seen the canvas waterproofing stuff they sell in boating stores, but you might want to give that a shot - I assume it's kind of like the old scotch guard we used to use on our rain gear...

I have a great friend with a 98 Formula 29PC that stays dry as a bone in gale force winds - I think 2008 technology should at least be on par with the stuff that is 10 years old... Yes, it's original canvas :)

LOL - I guess everything is relative - I was getting about .5 mpg on my last boat, so comparatively, I'm really enjoying the fuel 'economy' of the 330.

That's great to know - I might have to pick up a bottle of that stuff!

However, that will have to happen after they resolve the fit issue - it is fitting poorly in several places and my tech was out there taking pictures to send to Sea Ray for replacement and/or modification.

Tim-

Thanks for this, I have heard of the product. Not real worried about it right now since we are doing a complete canvas change out this winter to a new camper top as mentioned.

I think I will ask them to treat the canvas with the 303 as well in an effort to stave off any possible leaks. I have boat neighbours running 340 Sundancers that claim they are absolutley water tight. They have both used 303 on their covers.

Best of luck with your list.
