2020 Lake Michigan Rendezvous

Sheesh...was it something I said?

Sunday got real quiet over here!
Did I wake up up at 5:30?
Our trip across the lake started out calm with 1-2 footers, 2-3 footers half way,(at this point the admiral got sick, first time ever. Maybe it was because someone introduced her to a new flavored gin the night before.lol) with solid 4 footer by the time we hit Grand Haven. But if we didn’t leave, I would still been there giving you company.

Well...turns out waiting that extra day did indeed make for calm seas but...sadly...I found me a submerged something just south of Sheboygan, WI. I was just 8 miles from the perfect drive north! :) The good news is that I did not lose the prop and, I suppose more importantly, I did not sink the boat :). The shaft stayed in place, kept the boat from taking on water. But I snapped a prop shaft, smoked the hub (if that's the hub?), bent a prop and bent the rudder. Got me a nice parking spot in the marina parking lot though!

Ughh....

A couple weeks before I'll be able to retrieve my boat, god willing, and bring her back to Michigan. But we're making the best of it up here in Sheboygan. A really cool town.

OH Man!!! Bummer!!! Sorry to hear that. Good luck with the repairs...

Thanks guys. I appreciate the thoughts.

It's a bit ironic, just a couple weeks ago I had a dock neighbor lose a fuel pump on a trip. After we helped him get into his slip I was commenting "I really should try to dock on a single, just so I know what it's like". Welp, done and done! A real treat that is...

Were you in close to shore? There is like an 8 mile long by 2 mile wide patch of submerged net stakes in that area....

Jeff

Sorry Stee6043. We had planned to stay till Monday, but decided late to spend 2 days in Racine with friends before heading back over the water. Was great meeting you and seeing everyone again. Wish more could have made it. Hopefully next year.

We left at 7am for Racine, got there at 8am. Had calm seas. Interesting riding out the thunderstorm that night. We were planning to pick up some more of the "floral infused gin" in the purple bottle. Maybe we'll hold off on anymore of that limited reserve.

Ugh. If you have the chance, try a restaurant is Sheboygan called Farm to Fork or something like that. I have a friend that raves about it.

The full crew and I had a great weekend in Sheboygan last weekend recovering the ole Sea Ray. Good to go now. For anyone in that area the crew at Harbor Center Marine are really fantastic. I was really impressed with them. And the facility. We very much enjoyed our stay. We will return...but will come from the east next time, not the south!

I thought I'd share the path of destruction. I mentioned above I was in 110' of water "last I checked" :). Turns out I was something closer to 40' of water when I hit something. But it was definitely not over the fields of marked fishing pots. I wish I had taken a screen shot but it turns out after the impact, when running on one engine, I drove RIGHT over one of the marked fishing pot locations. What luck. Obviously I wasn't paying attention to the plotter once I was focused on getting into harbor on a single.

What looks like a set of parenthesis in the track here is what a violent, hard left turn looks like at 23kts :) It turns out a loose prop smashed up against a rudder makes for a very effective sea-brake.

Well I took on a project for the winter redoing a 16 ft. bass boat for the river. It had a few holes in the bottom and the transom is rotten so I cut out the floor took the foam out and cut out the transom. I got a nother boat that was junk for the motor and the seats and 67# trolling motor on the bow oh and a 12 gal tank to put in the rebuild, and that will keep me out of trouble.
