Newport Beach has had a wonderful tradition of hosting an annual Christmas boat parade for years. The 2020 event was officially cancelled this year due to Southern California's lockdown. The people decided to form an "unofficial" parade, following the same route as the "official" parades of years past.
I contacted the Newport Beach Harbor Department and rented a mooring in their "F" field, between Lido Island and the Balboa Peninsula. 70+ daytime temperatures for both Saturday and Sunday were in the forecast, so it looked to be a perfect weekend for boating. To get in the spirit, I strung up some nice led lights on Friday night in our slip.
We arrived on Saturday afternoon, tied up to the mooring and did a little cocktail cruise before sundown.
The parade started at 6:30 and the boats began to pass our location around 7:00. I would estimate there were 100 to 150 decorated vessels including all of the electric duffy boats. I believe the total number of boats were slightly less than in past years.
We had a perfect spot to watch all of the boats go by. On Sunday we had some friends stop by for a little champagne in the sun, before heading back to our marina.
We will definitely be back next year!
