Hello

First of all- Im from norway so please dont tease me cause of my bad english.

I got a 1989 searay 230cc with a 5.7 v8 mercruiser.

It wont start. I got 12v to the coil but no spark FROM the coil.
New distributorhead and New rotor.
Tried a friends coil and that didnt help either.

It just wont ignite..

What should I check now?

Does it have points? Are they opening and closing, pull distributor cap and have some one crank engine while you watch the points. May be bad points.

Distributorcap have points yes. ( If we mean the same)
I bought new cap and new rotor.

I just dont understand why I dont get any spark...

Was the engine running previously for you?

Have you done anything, changed any parts, that then caused this to happen?

The previous posters question was not about points in the distributor cap, which I think is what you have comprehended.

When you remove the cap, you are then looking at the distributor. The rotor button. Below the rotor button, is the components that break the circuit to the coil, and cause the spark.

Older engines run points, also known as a contact set. As the distributor rotates that set of contacts should be opening and closing.....making and breaking the circuit.
In a contact set up, there is also a condenser, usually secured on the outside of the distributor. It is good practice to replace both of these, the condensers do age and then the contact set prematurely fails.

Also be very aware when replacing contacts and/or condensers exactly where the condenser wire fits onto the contact set securing post through the distributor. Placing it on the wrong part of the insulation will ground the points out, no spark. Got caught once for a couple of hours as a young apprentice.

If the distributor does not have points, then would assume it has been upgraded to an electronic module.

With no spark, and checking another coil, this is the area I would be suspecting.

Changed the components below the distributor rotor. ITS ALIVE!

Goes fine when I start up and on low rpm, but when I want to go faster and higher rpm the motor wont go clean..

Carbertor adjustments?
I had a mechnic overhaul the carb. He said he adjusted it back to where it was.
But I hope this is just some easy adjustments.

You changed the components below the distributor cap. I presume it had points/contact set?

Did you adjust them with a feeler gauge or dwell meter?

Have you run it for a while, then rechecked that setting after they have bedded in?

Importantly have you checked and adjusted the engine timing?

Also check and ensure vacuum advance is working on the distributor, and centrifugal advance, need to do thus with a timing light

It's an 89. Iam pretty sure he has a thunderbolt IV ignition. Does the rotor have a metal "exciter" on the bottom of it?

it has a round disc with slots cut in it where it passes the sensor
. Can you use a test light? Can you see if there is 12v at the + side of the coil

Also, if you see a little corrosion on the sensor and you decided to clean it up, you will "demagnetize" it and it won't run for crap if at all.
