Is there any risk or downside in using 87octane gas in these engines? I frequently carry a couple of 5gal cans from the local gas station and don't use the dock gas much. Or is the dock gas better for the engines?

Or should I use premium gas or always fuel at the boat gas dock?

I also use 'blue' marine fuel stabiizer for every 10gals I put in.

Merc's engines (the ones we would see in a Sea Ray, anyways) are all designed to run on 87 octane. No damage. The time you might need to go higher is if you get run-on. Pre-detonation should not be a problem.

The only engine that run-on seems to be a recurring problem with is the V-6 (carb'd). For whatever reason (I'm not sure as to the specifics) the 4cyl and V-8 carb'd engines aren't as susceptible. With F.I. engines, this shouldn't be a problem (at least not related to octane) at all.

You should be fine. Keep using the additive (all the time) at the recommended (or above) levels.

On edit: The dock gas may already have additive in it. But don't, worry - if you also add your own you won't hurt anything.

What Dennis said. Just in case because it's not clear from your post... It is grossly unsafe to carry 5 gallon cans aboard a boat. The 2000 340DA holds 225 gallons or about 45 5 gallons cans of fuel. Can't see how it's reasonable to handle that much fuel.

Best regards,
Frank

Frank,

No. I don't carry any cans on boat. Just use the cans once in awhile to add in the slip. We don't cruise to far so this saves a few dollars and keeps the fuel fresh.
