Not that it matters anymore, but the Volvo Penta V8 and V6 gassers (at least available here in the US) are the same engines as the Merc's. There are few mechanical differences relating to packaging/fuel injection/etc but the engines are essentially the "same."
The Volvo diesels and the old 4-cylinder gassers were true Volvo engines.
ALL of the Penta product line is held in high regard. Only issue's I've heard are with the Ocean series which seems to have been resolved.
Since Volvo's acquisition of OMC, they use the same transom cutouts as the Merc/OMCs do.
