Here's the question guys and gals- is a 350 chevy engine block and heads from a car the same as a boat 350 except for the add ons like exhaust manifolds, etc? I have asked many people and so far it's at 50/50....somebody has to be wrong....The reason I ask....I can get a rebuilt 350 from the shop for less than a grand and put all the add ons from my existing engine, i think.....OR does a marine 350 have different compression, cams or ? if you know(and not think you know) shoot me an email...Im an engine away from putting this boat in the water in June....Thanks for your advice, gary

No. Closer to the ones installed in GM trucks.

Best regards,
Frank

A car or truck engine manafactured by GM will fit but they are very differant. You can get a GM reman 350 for marine or there is Jasper Enginw & Transmission. I looked up a jasper and just picked of of about 100 5.7 Mercruiser remans they lisy and it would run around 2800.00. Just my two cents worth, dont tryto replace a marine engine with a generic auto engine.

Marine engines and Auto engines are very different in internals. Blocks, Heads ect are same. Its the desired operation range that makes the difference. A marine engine works at a much higher RPM than a car. You would never drive down the road taching 3,000 RPM. On a boat, normal. So the cam is way different. Also there is a difference in the freeze plugs and head gasgets depending if you will be operating in Salt Water. If you are going to rebuild your own engine, you must do some research for marine parts. It can be done, but you will spend more for marine.
FYI, my boats previous owner had a Car engine in the boat. The killed over no good engine is on my garage floor. JUNK.
I'm not sure if there are more differences than the ones I listed, so chech it out thouroghly (bad speller) before investing any real cash

Just recently I have had to rebuild my 1998 Mercruiser 4.3L. check out the discussion: http://www.clubsearay.com/forum/showthread.php?t=12558

The only difference in it and a vehicle engine was the thickness of the rings. The vehicle rings are standard size the marine rings are metric. As in my other posts. I have found the same piston that the mercruiser dealer wanted $150 for $35. The piston in the marine 4.3L is the same size as in the 350. They are made out of the same material. no difference except for the name; marine use. The marine engine runs at a higher sustained rpm while the vehicle engine runs at varying rpm. The cams are different in that the profiles are different because of the type of use. You wouldn't run a cam profile for a dragster in you stock boat engine. It would never run right unless the engine was build to handle that profile. You basic marine engine has been built with the better parts from the manufacturer. My 4.3L has the vortec heads on it not the stock V-6. As the older mercruiser 5.7 would probably have the famous double hump heads and the new 5.7 would have the Vortec style head too.

Thanks for your reply-i dont understand why boat engines have to be 1500 dollars more expensive than their almost exact car and truck ones... a rip off if you want my 2 cents worth...anyway, I moved from kansas city back to anaheim calif. to get closer to Dad whos getting up in years and I wind up getting a SWEET 1984 Sea Ray Cuddy cruiser 245 when I arrived. It had its engine removed, so I dont even have a block, but many rebuilders in Orange county will rebuild small blocks for under 1,000. Thats why I asked about compatibility....the outdrive is rebuilt, and I cleaned the snot out of the inside, so as soon as I get a good deal on an engine, were cruising the west coast! Im watching craigslist and other sites for an engine deal....If you have any more advice, fire it my way....I miss the lakes around KC, but theres nothing like the west coast for boating salt water...Yellowtail watch out-here I come....! Deals are out there, just keep your eyes open. Check out this post of mine and the parts I've found out there.

The engine and drive cost me $800 . The power steering cost me $175 plus $100 to have it taken to Richmond VA to have a friend truck it to PA for me. Oh that cost me 2 plates of homemade Pasta!!!
