Well, out at the boat. Starboard engine starts like nothing ever happened.

I hate intermittent problems. I did order a new carling switch. I’m going to replace it anyway.
I had intermittent problems with starting and low voltage reading on my port engine. After a long debug process that yielded nothing, I stumbled one day upon a blade connector on the back of the Carling switch that wasn't seated over the post. The post on the Carling was in between the insulator and the metal. Plugged it in properly and intermittent problems went away for good.

Thanks. Will check it out.

Thanks. Will check it out.
I was also going to suggest to swap the Carling switches and see if the problem stayed with the switch or the engine. But I figure you know to do that and are just waiting on the new Carling instead.

If anyone knows of someone selling an 02 or newer 400sb on east coast, let me know. Selling my 310 because fell in love with the layout of my friends boat.

Working on aircraft that was SOP to swap parts and see if the problem moved.

I have two new carling switches coming. I figure if one is sick, the other will follow soon.

Thanks for the help.

i will do that too on my end

I had someone damage my screen door yesterday and I wanted to know if you guys know where I can get a new one? Thanks in advance!
Mine never had a screen door. But my wife had one of those magnetic "screen curtains" made to the specific dimensions of the door. It works great, you can just blast through it in either direction and it magnetically snaps back together behind you. Installation is easy as it uses velcro around the top and sides that fits perfect in the recess. Then we take it off in the winter, when bugs aren't an issue and if folds up tidy. I'll take pictures if you'd like and see if she remembers the vendor. She ordered it online to custom dimensions. I think it was about $80.

I said I would post some pictures if this project came to fruition. It did, and almost done...need to put in the headliner (cover black) and ultimately canvas enclosure (when my wallet cools down). Thanks for all the input from the forum. Here are some photos:

Hello. We are considering making an offer on a 2001 400 Sedan Bridge. It has Twin 7.4 Horizons with 1220 hrs. I have been told that 1220 "is a lot of hours" for these engines. Is that accurate? I am new to this type of cruiser (our current boat is a 1988 Doral Prestancia), so I'm a fish out of water with a vessel like this so any advice as to what to look on the 400 Sedan Bridge would be much appreciated. Thank you

The engine hours are subjective. If it is a well documented and maintained set of engines, 1200 hours is not bad. If it's had minimal maintenance, you probably have problems coming.

Is it a fresh water boat? Salt water? Location?

CaptRonn gave you a good answer. It depends on the maintenance and where it has been kept, in fresh water or salt water? Get a good survey and have the engines checked. Both an oil survey and compression checked. Depending on the usage it may need risers and manifolds. Also what is the condition of the generator? That could be a 12K-15K expense if it needs to be replaced.

It is a large heavy boat, 23,000 lbs dry weight. What is your type of boating? Long cruises & travelling or short cruises and hanging at the dock?

I have a 2000 400DB in freshwater with diesels and my dock mate @Nepenthe has a 1999 400DB with the 7.4's in it. He burns 33 plus GPH @ 19 kts while I burn 22 gph @ 21 kts. For longer cruising and travelling, the diesels are the way to go.

The diesels have more authority in handling around the dock compared to the gas engine models. That is due to the higher torque the diesels provide. Having the fly bridge does provide more wind area so it is easier for the wind to push you around while maneuvering at the dock.

Both are good engines, just depends on your planned usage. Diesel powered boats cost more initially but also have a higher resale but any major repairs can be very costly. The possible issue with the gas powered boats is if you have a major issue with a block or rebuild, I understand it is getting hard to find a replacement block. Not impossible, just fewer blocks are available.

Good luck. Show us pictures or it didn't happen!

Hi everyone - I am going to take the boat from Chicago to Michigan over Labor Day Weekend and I wanted to make sure my boat was all ready for the trip. I have twin turbo 350 HP Cat Diesels At the dock in idle I hit 3200 RPM’s but out on the water with 3/4 gas & water tank I am only able to get 2600 RPM’s. I changed out the razors and that did not make a difference. What should I do next? Is that normal?

I wanted to know what is a good cruise speed for the GPH? We will have 4 total and a full tank of gas to start.

it’s in freshwater and is located in Montreal, Canada

I’ll request service records. The generator has 370hrs on it

The problem with a low hour generator is lack of use. Unless it's had a routine maintenance history, the low time could be potential problems.

If it's a westerbeke, you may be looking at a back end rebuild due to corrosion. Westerbeke did a poor job on the stator/armature setups by using materials that create galvanic corrosion. The armature steel fitting pressed onto a cast aluminum assembly is an example.

Of course, if you are getting the boat at a price that reflects the engines and generator, then it's a judgement call.

Johnny Utah - I have a 400DB with the 3116's 350HP diesels. You should be getting 2800 RPM under load. Could be anything from bottom condition to wrong props to a problem with the engine. Hopefully @fwebster will answer as he is the CAT guru...

The cruise sweet spot on my CAT 3116's is 2200 to 2400 RPM. I believe it should be similar for your engines also.

I looked at my Sea Trial and it showed I was at 28.5 MPH at 2800 RPM’s - I did not have any water that day but the fuel tank was full. I have a fresh bottom paint too. I wonder why I lost the 200 RPM’s....
