410 sundancer engine hatch lift

I'm one of the guys that always unplugs unattended boats if I see 'em plugged in over winter. I'd prefer not have someone else's cooked batteries and/or failed charger ruin my upcoming summer...

Normally I'm doing it ahead of time because, say I'm heading down tomorrow afternoon, I want to be sure they are charged and I can get the hatch open.

Why is someone else's dead batteries ruining your summer? Unless I'm not understanding what you're saying ...

Because when your battery explodes or catches fire you get to burn the whole building down along with everyone elses boat.

Its right in our inside heated storage contract that batteries are to be disconnected and nothing left plugged in unattended

I see where you're coming from but I'm storing outside (should have specified)

Most of the people I know who store classic cars or boats inside (for the winter) leave them on a trickle charger with the battery in place if it's allowed. That's what I always did when I didn't have a boat and could afford an exotic car :(

Is there really an epidemic of things exploding in storage? Just trying to understand.

If I wasn't allowed to keep them connected, I'd take them home. Do you leave them in the boat but disconnected?

Yes you can leave them in the boat but unhooked. It seems like once a year you hear about one going up in smoke. Toledo beach had a bad one here last year, well over a hundred boats lost.
I’ve never had an issue in the spring with dead batteries. Once I hook them up and turn on the charger (outside :)) , they barely take anything.

Ahh, yeah, outside is different. Though you probably still have boats right next to you I assume? In that case maybe you don't smoke the entire building, maybe just the boats on either side of you :)

I think boats are a bit different than cars. The most impactful is probably the fact that there loads of boats out there, 20+ years old, that have original equipment chargers onboard. They have aged (significantly) and don't have any/all of the safety features the newer chargers might have.

Even if it's unlikely that a battery goes completely bad it is indeed 5X more likely to happen to a boat with five batteries onboard when compared to a car with one...

And last - how may of us know boaters that have never once checked the water levels on their batteries? I do I do!

So...yeah...I guess that's why I'm always unplugging peoples boats in winter :)

I have never disconnected batteries during winterization, guess I just never thought about it. I have my own heated shop, guess maybe I should start, I dunno.

When you do get it opened, splice into the motor wires #8 and run a feed to a new location. install with 2 bolts in a plexi plate mounted in a convenient location, attach jumpers and your ready
