Has anyone had success on this boat with the weaver system. I inherited the weaver snap davit with the boat. It has the drop down and extended arm to adjust for the height off the water. Simple geometry of my set up tells me i wont be able to tip the boat against my transom. Any thoughts. Below is the davit i have. Just purchased an Achilles 290 and want to make sure this will work before i mount pads.

Rocket,

I have the same setup on my 380 dancer, you can set that up on your boat, tip the dingy up at the angle you would like it at and then you'll have to measure and install stand offs bars to support the dingy off the transom.

I ran my stand off bars at a 45 degree angle down to the base of the platform where it meets the transom. This makes it easy to step over those bars to get acrosss platform.

I've had this similar setup on my last three boats.

Rondevue -i would assume that the drop down bracket prohibits the dink from resting on the transom? Seem like as you rotate the dink up she will get wedge on the riser part of the davit. Any pics of your set up?

How about a side shot of the 420/44 to see the geometry?

My 380DA has the standard snap davit w/ a Zodiac Y310 that rests against the transom and sits flat on the water.

The only issue w/ mine is I've got to let a little air out of one tube to unhook a davit, due to the Zodaic hull straight and the platform w/ a slight outward curve.

Wingless - this is the only pic i could find of the davits. Taken when we surveyed in Dec 08.

It could be possible to fabricate a hinge for where the davit plate attaches to the swim platform.

It would require Hercules to lift it though.

Mine requires two people to break the stiction and lift it off the water. Or, I use a block and tackle ifin I do it myself.

I've seen systems w/ arms that hold the inflatable away from the transom. Those look weak and failure-prone. I wouldn't want that in a storm, 'cause I think it would rip off.

There does not appear to be a good solution for that swim platform. You may be better off just getting a smaller, light soft-bottom inflatable and yanking it up by hand and securing it to the transom w/ lines.

I have found that with a lightweight dink and engine, no davit system is needed for the 420DA. I had Davits on my last boat, but did not want to clutter up the large swim platform on this boat with unsightly hardware. We use the Mercury Air Deck 270 with Honda 2 hp and the total weight is only about 110 lbs. With minimal effort, the dink can be pulled up to sit directly on the large swimplatform.

To strap it down, I fashioned a place on the rear bulkhead inside the transom locker to run a kayak strap from (Thule Straps) and then out the round power cord hole to the handle of the dink. Run the strap once around the dink handle and then pull to cinch tight to the transom. One additional strap from the bow rope of the dink to the starboard cleat and it is very secure.

Yes, we have been in some rough water on the Chesapeake and it rides just fine.

All you will need to do is mount the pads on the dinghy a little higher than usual, this way when its tipped up it will not hit the extension coming off the platform. I have seen it done this way a few times on 420's. Buy yourself some of those arms that weaver sells and keep it off the transom, it will ride just fine and never rip off like previously said.

It probably wont last in "the perfect storm" but if you are out in that stuff who really cares whats going to happen to the dinghy on the back lol.

My brackets actually do not drop, they are at the right height when they are straight out on my boat.

I do have some great pictures of my set up, I will try to post them tonight when I get home.

My dingy when tipped up is about 3 feet away from the transom, giving me plenty of room to access the locker and get across the platform with the dingy in the up position.

I think the 420/44's transom is too high off the water to not have the step downs.

On a 420 Sundancer you would have drop the brackets down, I have a couple friends with 420's, I know this boat well, though none of them have the Weaver setup.

Here's a couple pictures of my setup.

Rondevue - Thanks for posting the pics, i see how this is done. Boat splashes in 2 weeks, i will check it out and post some pics. You keep the motor on while runnning? Is that a 2 or 4 stroke? I thought you cant do it with a 4 stroke on an angle.

Rocket,

I've never had any problems with my setup, I do leave my motor on when tipped up. It is a 2 stroke moter, 2004 Merc 15Hp, though I do know you can tip some 4 strokes up if they are laying on a curtain side, usually with the tiller arm down I believe. You'd have to do some research on that.

If you look closely at my pictures you'll see I also used the Weaver Arc on the transom of the dingy, this will handle the weight of the motor.

If you have more questions along the way, I will try to help out, either post it here or IM me. I've installed this system on at least half dozen boats for other people.
