Dont understand the purpose of the recessed cup indents in the cockpit table so did a little cutting and got a cup holder that works

I made a whole table like that, with the SS deep cup holders, for our boat as the original table was so heavy and big for the space. I broke off and sealed the drains in the bottom with marine sealant after the Admiral had drinks drip on her clothing from the drain.
