480 DB Owners Club

Mine was doing that a while back. It ended up being a Comm issue. They cleaned up the connections and replaced the cable between the display and controller. I was getting an "HP" error also. Not to be confused with HI PS error.
TY, I re-seated the connections on both ends and it cleared up the issue... so it too was a communications issue.

Does anyone have any line drawings of the 480DB in profile view? I want to get some shirts made up and would like an outline of the 480 on it. Just wondering if anyone has come across something like this. I checked google and came up empty.

Thanks,
Vince

From the owners manual supplement on www.searay.com. Pull off the dimensional data and you are good to go for embroidery etc.

Hello: I'm looking to put 2004 480 DB under contract in the next week or so. I called Sea Ray technical support as I have seen on posts on the CSR forums to get a copy of the hull layup diagram to determine if the bottom of the boat is cored, and if it is what type of core material. The person that answered the phone told me Sea Ray doesn't provide that service and my only choice was to contact a dealer. I have a call in to the closest dealer, but do not have high hopes of getting the information. Did I misunderstand something or is there another way I can get this information? Thanks in advance for any help!

This was posted in this thread about a year ago.

"I'm interested in purchasing a Sea Ray 480DB Sedan Bridge. Can anyone clarify at what point Sea Ray eliminated the cored hull below the waterline on this model boat?

UPDATE: I called Sea Ray today and they informed me that Sea Ray 480DBs with hull numbers starting at #587 and above have solid fiberglass hulls below the waterline. #587 is a 2004 hull, so given that Sea Ray stopped making the 48 after 2004, I'm guessing there are very few solid fiberglass hulls out there.

There is no published data chart to identify the hull production number from your HIN. The only way to identify it is to call Sea Ray."

I think there are some posts here that talk about 480's after a certain year changing the hull type. You should be able to find it in a search or maybe someone will reply to your message and answer your question. Or, as mention a call to SR will give you a definitive answer.

Good luck with your purchase and make sure you have the best marine surveyor available to you.

Thanks for the replies! I called Sea Ray today but they told me they didn't have any records for boats that were more than 10 years old. Not sure how to find the hull production number if they didn't keep the records. Thanks again for the help!

The production #'s are on the transom with the hull id#.

Ok thanks Mitch! The numbers under the HIN are 480DB-503. Guess the bottom is cored.

We owned a 2003 for nine years and they are really great boats. The earlier ones were fully cored until around 2002 when Sea Ray switched to a much better design with solid hull sides and coring below the waterline with solid glass mounting pads at all underwater penetrations.

I wouldn’t be too concerned about the cored hull as I never had or heard of any issues with 2003 or 2004’s. Any problems would be found by your surveyor. Plus I believe a solid glass 2004 is a unicorn that are few and far between.

Feel free to message me with any questions as I pretty much know the 480DB inside and out.

Thanks so much for the info and the offer to answer questions.! That information makes me feel better about proceeding. Interviewed a surveyor that worked on Sea Rays for 20+ years and knows the boats very well, including the 480, so its looking like we will move forward.

Thanks again!

Hey Guys, looking for a little advice here. While running the boat last week, I got "Error" messages on my CAT displays. This first happened while docking. Nex day, while starting up the engines, no Error message was displayed until about 5 minutes after running the boat. I typically have the RPMs displayed and when scrolling though the different settings for these displays, I get either the Error message or a "0" but the engine hours do show up correctly.
First thought is a loose connection on a wire, but I am not sure. Anyone have any ideals where I should start to look?

My power steering system is leaking into the rear bilge from either the steering rack, hoses, or pressure relief valve. Does anybody have the diagram of the system that they can post? I’m heading down this weekend to track down the leak.

Any pointers on a common failure in the system? My manuals are in the boat a couple hours south of me.

Most likely the drive cylinder seal has failed. Mine did 30 miles from West End Bahamas. There is a good chance your steering system is the same as mine. Seastar HC5801-2 power steering rack. They are easily rebuildable provided there is no corrosion or defects on the shafts. There are three Seastar kits required to do a full rebuild - HS5196, HS5197, and HS5198

I have the same system. Did you rebuild your unit yourself or have a pump shop rebuild it? I have changed out rack and pinion on vehicles and this looks similar.

At the time I couldn't do the retrofit; we were in the Bahamas. Had a shop in Freeport do it. However, everything looks simple enough to do. I've done hydraulic cylinders on the Kabota and the steering cylinder on my last boat. It looks all SOP. If it is just the main rudder drive cylinder then even easier yet. If you have the tools to get the assembly out of the boat and end caps off the cylinder then you're gold.
I keep a set of seals on the boat.

I found the leak. It was a cracked fitting hat holds the pressure gauge onto the cylinder servo. I’m not sure why there is a gauge there, but there is. I had noticed drops coming from it earlier this year so I cleaned and resealed the threads. I guess I must have ham fisted it during the reassemble and caused a small crack, which over time (and pressure) started spewing fluid. The local NAPA had the fitting and I was back up and running in no time.

Cleaning the bilge of all the steering fluid was a beach
