I was doing a little research on our new boat. A 1992 400EC. I was told it had 454s in it. The boat has 700 or so hours but the motors were changed at around 350 hours. They put the change out hours next to the hour meters. After seeing the motor builders decal on the valve covers I contacted the guy who did it years ago. He didnt remember much but he did remember that they weren't 454s but were 489 Strokers. Is this a good thing? It seems odd to me that someone would have to change out the motors at 350 hours. Is it? Also it looks like these motors have remote oil filters. Is this a stock item? Thanks in advance.

yes changing out motors at 350 hours is not normal. The 489 is a stroked version of the big block 454. So has more Torque and HP. Should do fine if they are taken care of.

Sometimes boat engines with low hours can need to be freshened up or replaced. When these engines sit (ie; Dock Queen) the seals get old and brittle and will not seal correctly.
This does not mean this is your situation but it is possible.
