Twice towed in now after running the boat for around an hour so it's good and up to temp then sitting and swimming for around an hour. When I try to restart it just cranks but no start. It is getting fuel but no spark. Will not start the rest of the day but once it sits overnight fires right up. This is making diagnostics difficult. Boat is a 2000 sundancer with 5.0 efi and bravo 3. I dont believe the coil is getting power but not sure I tested it right when it died today. And really don't want to break down again to try and figure out what it is..... props to Ohio dnr as they put me right on the dock with no scratches and towed me a good distance. Has anyone had something similar? Thinking ignition control module but that's pretty expensive to just throw a part at it.

Get a volt meter and do some basic checking first. Check all connections and all grounds. Give it a good once over but check everything

Pickup coil in the distributor or the primary ignition coil. I'd do the pickup coil first, maintenance item after that many years. If it's an EST ignition get one from Napa for an 88 Firebird

On that engine no spark should inhibit the fuel pump. Very strange… That is a function of the ignition sensor located under the rotor in the distributor. Was no spark verified at each cylinder?

No not at the spark plug. We verified no power to the coil. Fuel pump definately works and yoy can visibly see the injectors firing fuel with the air cleaner off. Started right up this morning..... I dont get it. I wish it would fail completely so k can figure out what it is.

Verify what you believe to be true by pulling plug each wire at the plug an and Ck for spark by grounding to the block. If you have spark and fuel but no start the ECT sensor is suspect.
