I have a 2007 240 sundeck with a mercruiser 5.0 mpi. I can run all day long (if I stay under 1500 rpm) and have no abnormal noises. If I run on plane (+/- 4000 rpm) and return to idle I have a noticeable ticking noise. Once engine cools down ticking is gone. Does not sound like valve train. Has anyone experienced anything like this ?

That sounds like the exhaust flappers at the top of the y pipe are starting to go.

The injectors produce a kind of a clicking sound but that is constant and obviously on the top of the engine. If intermittent, as you describe, it may be a bearing on one of your pulleys getting ready to go out.

How fast is the ticking happening? A bunch of times per second? My first thought is injectors, as well. But maybe once they're good and hot you're just hearing them better. Do you use a good fuel additive all the time?

I have found that after a couple tanks of gas with marine stable the noise is gone.
