Just wondering if my all rope goodwindlass can use 5/8" double braid anchor road . my rode gets tangled in anchor compartment, I figured maybe double braid may lay better than the stiff single braid . thanks for any info Todd aboard Chardonneh

I’m not sure that will work. You can send an email to goodwindlass and ask them. The last time I replaced my rode I bought it from them and followed their instructions.

Basically lay the rode out on the dock, run the unfinished end through the windlass and tie it off in the anchor locker.

Use the windlass to pull in the rode making sure that the feed does not twist. It should coil properly in the anchor locker.

You can use the same procedure with your old rode and it may fix the problem.

8-plait is the king of laying nicely in the locker.

In addition to the above about laying it out... It also might be time to simply get new rope, though. Or, try giving it a good cleaning. Soak/wash/repeat in a big pail - or put it in a tumbling washer. Finish by soaking it in water/fabric softener.

Thanks fellow boaters, I have done both things ,the anchor rode dead fall into my anchor rode locker is only just under 21" (1988 Searay SD 340) I'm thinking of making a large upside down fibreglass dome and securing it to the floor of the locker , hoping the rode will follow the contour and lay flat.

Hi Dennis thanks for replying , I think so to. I'm just concerned if the windows will grab the smoother double braid vs the rougher single braid .

Usually, windlasses handle 8-plait just fine. Good is an excellent company - I would give them a call to double check, though - just to be sure. Remember to mention that the main reason you are considering it is because you have limited "fall" in the anchor locker.

I would send a note or call these guys to confirm unless Dennis is using that rope with a Good Windlass:

The line they have for sale is all 3 strand......probably for a reason.

Todd, just realize that you keep mentioning "double braid" and that is very different line than the "8 plait" that Lazy Daze mentioned. I have never seen a windlass manufacturer recommend double braid. Doesn't mean they don't but seems unusual to me.

Good Windlasses will only work with their line. I know this the hard way. Trust me
On this topic. What is a good or the best auto windlass that will work best with rode and chain? I want to upgrade my 410 from the horizontal to auto feed the chain locker on my 410 AC
