Has anyone ever changed the shift lever on this engine or similar engine? seems like the handle is mounted to a shaft and pin holding it in place. I dont know how to get to the pin. remove engine? Any help would be appreciated. thanks

If you get your serial number, you can get a parts diagram at www.dougrussell.com

Should be able to figure it out from there.

Where are you in CT?

I did this repair on my 1980's 5 hp a few years ago. I had to remove the motor and get the gaskets to reseal it. It was a little tricky separating the motor and trying not to damage the aluminum surfaces. Just be patient as the gasket on mine was not glued, but it was tough to separate. If I remember the shift shaft/lever was about 30 bucks from the merc dealer and I purchased the water pump, bearings and seals for the prop shaft. I actually ordered this from Marine sports center on Ffld ave in Bridgeport.

Good luck - not a bad repair job really.
