I am about to buy a 8.5 dinghy (Baltic) and now am looking at different motors for it. I searched craiglist in my area and found 2 5HP Mercury motors. One is 2005 that they wanted 800 but came down to 600. The second is a 2006 or 2007 and they guy is wanting 800. Any thoughts on if these are good prices? I was told new they go for about 1,300? I have a message in to the first person to come by and see it and run it, to make sure it runs fine, if so I'm thinking thats a good deal but thought I'd see what others think.

p.s.- I assume a 5HP on a 8.5 dinghy would run pretty good? Right now it's just myself, wife, and our puppy (chocolate lab)

Thanks!!

Brian

I have a 10'-2" Dinghy with a 6 HP motor - Tohatsu - same motor as Mercury and Nissan. Tohatsu makes them for Mercury - only difference is the stickers - new it is $1225 for a 6 HP. You can buy the Tohatsu online for $1150 including shipping. My 6 hp will fly with just me. With another person it doesn't want to get up on plane. But it works just fine for my needs.

I have the 5 HP Merc two stroke on a 9.6 mercury PVC 270 airdeck dinghy. The boat will plane with one on board but not with two....almost, but not quite. Not a concern for me, as I didn't buy it to ski from or to go fast in the harbor.

I bought the 5HP motor brand new in 2006 as a 2005 leftover from Westmarine. From memory, I paid in the neighborhood of $1100 including all the taxes and after all the coupons. The new motor came with a one year factory warranty and inculded the hose and 3.5 gallon gas tank. I wouldn't hesitate at all buying this same motor used if it starts easily, idles nicely and pumps water. Ask the owner if the impeller and lower unit oil have been changed....

I sold my 2004 merc 5hp two stroke for 600 maybe two - three month ago.

I touched the paint up to mint condition and run as new.

I think I could have held out for a little more...

Well I ended up find a used 2006-2007 Merc 5 HP from a local guy here on craiglist. Picked it up today, got him down to $700. It's in very good shape except engine cover is scratched up. Anyone have idea where I could buy a new cover for it? Looked on ebay and google and really couldn't find anything for a mercury. Thanks for any help. Ended up getting a baltik 8.5 air floor inflatable brand new so excited now to get out and try them out. Now I just got to look at how to store on my swim platform, there's always somthing to do!

After getting the engine back and looking under the cover. I came to find out that I either prob have a 2004 or 2005 5HP merc. From what I can see it must be a 2 stroke as well. Also when I bought this from the guy on craiglist I never got a manual or any docs about it. Does anyone know what the mixture of oil to gas is on a merc 2 stroke? Also can anyone confirm if it's a 04 or 05 and has a small gas tank builit in under the cover that it is a 2 stroke? Thanks as always

I have an older Mariner 5HP 2 stroke, it is basically a Merc. The manual calls for 50:1.

How do you like your Baltic? I got my 9.5 airfloor last week and think it's a pretty decent boat for the price. I am picking up a different pump with a gage on it tomorrow since the pump that comes with them is junk. It got on plane by myself but was slow to plane with two people. After reading more on the website I need to put more air in it so I think it will run alot better once I do that.

Don't buy the cover that affordableinflatables sells for these boats, it is complete misadvertised junk.

This weekend will be the first trip out to use our new baltik. Looking forward to see how it works out. Luckly our 310 came with a built in air compressor so I don't have to worry about a pump. What is wrong with the covers? I went ahead and bought one afterwords because I plan on keeping mine baltik inflated and stored on back on swimplatform. Thanks for the info on the oil/gas mix.

Have you put your cover on yet? It is advertised as a Sunbrella-like material with zippers and velcro so you can leave the motor in the up or down position and still use the cover. About the only thing in common with a sunbella cover is that they used thread somewhere on it. It is made of a rubberized non-breathable material and mine has no zippers or velcro. Mine will not stay on the ends of the pontoons even if you pull the drawstring tight.

The guys on this site are very helpful and will tell you everything you need to know about outboards: http://www.marineengine.com/cgi-bin/discus/discus.cgi you can also buy parts from the parent site.

Hey Brian,
How are you going to tie down the inflatable? Are you getting davits? Let me know how the first trip out on it goes...

Do you know where online you can get that 6hp for 1150? The 5hp I ended up having to return to the seller. Had a lot more issues than i realized. Think I'm going to go the "new" route now. Thanks for the info.

Tohatsu is great...If I didn't get such a good deal on my 6hp Merc ($800.00) I would have bought one of them.

Good luck Brian and let me know what you end up with..

Found a Tohatsu and Nissan online. Both 6HP, Tohatsu is 1195 and Nissan is 1270 (both include free shipping & no sales tax). I thought these were pretty much same engine? Anyone know why the diff in price?? I don't see a reason to spend extra $75 for same HP brand new engine? Both are 2010.

I would go with the Tohatsu, it's a great engine..You just pay more for the name.. You might also want to check Defender and see if they have any leftover 2008's which would still be under warranty...And check with West Marine and see if they will match the lowest price you can find online. They used to, and might be willing to do so to make a sale.

thanks for all the info, ended up getting the 6hp tohatsu (2010 model). Total price was 1,229 w/ free shipping and no sales tax. Best deal I could find out there for the most hp vs price. Thanks again for all the input everyone, looking forward to getting it and putting it to good use now.
